What colour shoes to wear with navy?

On a complete whim at lunchtime, I bought a pair of navy skinny trousers and a top which is red/white/navy pattern. I have no navy footwear so am now worried about what shoes I'll wear Confused

I have ankle boots in black, beige, tan and khaki and loafers in (patent) nude/blush as well as patent nude court shoes (and several pairs of runners)

Would any of the above colours work, or do I need to buy new boots/shoes as well now?!

Tan or nude would work in my opinion.

Thankyou, will have a try-on later

Sounds like most would go to be honest.
I mostly wear navy trousers and pair them with tan boots, silver brogues, mushroomy patent loafers, or white pumps. I do have blue shoes too but find I wear those the least. They're better with denim I find.

Jens303 · 15/01/2019 16:17

sounds like a good excuse to go shoe shopping to me

WineNotTea · 15/01/2019 17:51

The nude blush would work, I wear navy trousers with boots or shoes in grey, navy, nude or red.
Grey is my go to colour with navy.

WineNotTea · 15/01/2019 17:53

Your patent loafers sound lovely, any chance of a link to them? —I must not spend any more money on shoes—

SpiritedLondon · 15/01/2019 20:19

I have loads of navy and currently wear leopard boots, tan snakeprint boots, black boots, red patent boots, ( I would like some oxblood ones) black brogues, pale grey snakeprint shoes. I also got emerald green shoes that I haven’t worn much..... I think you have stacks of choice. Navy is just a classic shade that is often more flattering than black.

I sometimes wear black shoes with navy. It is always frowned upon on MN but in real life I see some very smart women doing it.

Also a navy suit and black shoes is a fairly classic smart menswear choice. So if they can, we can.

I’ll tell you what is fabulous with navy, burnt orange. I have a pair of orange stilettos I got from Office and they look fabulous. I’ve had so many compliments.

A bit OT but the clearance section of my favourite shoe shop was full of navy shoes. The shop assistant said that it was because navy shoes match with next to nothing (too matchy matchy to wear with navy itself?) and often tend to look dowdy! So maybe wear anything but navy shoes?! Grin

EngagedAgain · 15/01/2019 23:03

Yes I agree navy shoes generally shout 'granny', with perhaps the exception being a nice navy court with a nice heel with a navy suit, skirt or trouser suit. So definitely not navy!

CountFosco · 16/01/2019 05:38

I wear navy shoes with navy all the time! But I don't like black shoes, I think they can often look cheap, a bit 'these are my only smart shoes so I bought black to go with everything'. Chocolate leather looks good with navy, or burgundy but both are harder to find. From your choices I'd go with the tan or nude but really I'd want to buy new red or white shoes!

Elledorado · 16/01/2019 07:41

Black looks "cheap" or frugal Count? "Cheap" sounds a bit snobby! Smile

Abra1de · 16/01/2019 09:15

When I googled black shoes navy clothes the women who came up wearing this combination did not look cheap.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 16/01/2019 11:28

I bought a beautiful pair of navy shoes from Seasalt last year. I assumed they would go with everything (I have a LOT of navy in my wardrobe!). They look wrong with virtually everything and I've worn them twice. Thank God they were in the sale!

I8toys · 16/01/2019 13:19

Just bought these to go with my navy stuff for spring/summer

White, if you are feeling very trendy. But boxfresh. You apparently need white show paint for maintenance.

insecure123 · 16/01/2019 15:42

I love navy and tan together

hmmwhatatodo · 16/01/2019 20:27

In the summer i wore white shoes with navy trousers and they looked really nice. An off white rather than a bright white though. Also wear dark tan/brown boots, espadrilles in a light pink/ mushroom mix, mink summer shoes. Not black though. I dont have any black footwear.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 16/01/2019 20:37

I LOVE navy with orange...though possibly not with the top you have bought. Otherwise, tan/nude/brown/metallic

messyhousetidymind · 16/01/2019 21:31

I would wear with black shoes/loafers but I'm not sure about black ankle boots

The other colours go with the trousers but not the top

I'd find some shoes you like in the sales

DontCallMeCharlotte · 17/01/2019 12:47

I8toys

Those Next shoes are lovely! Great colour.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 17/01/2019 12:58

Navy is an understated and forgiving colour. The only shoe colour I can think of that might look 'off' would be a non-navy blue. As others have said, tan and navy are good together, as are navy and cream.

CountFosco · 17/01/2019 14:18

I didn't say black always looks cheap, it can look fab (I have a gorgeous pair of black suede buckled shoes that always get compliments) but a lot of cheap work shoes are black and I'm thinking about those kind of slightly ugly shoes.

I've been thinking about the navy shoe dilemma and I think Out is on to something, I think your navy shoes need to be very dark (navy shoe polish is essential) so it's darker than the navy fabrics you are wearing. You sometimes see a light navy that I suspect is the problematic colour. Having said that I have bright blue suede mules and I wear those with navy ankle skimmers and I think they look fab so it's all about the individual items.

All navy inspiration.

Apologies for not replying sooner, thanks for all the advice

^^This is absolutely my problem. I now need grey shoes... (DH will be thrilled!)
