Really greasy hair after washing

Misty9 · 12/01/2019 21:57

For a while now my hair was often noticeably greasy underneath after washing. It was just one patch behind my ear, but now it is on the top of my head and underneath at the back. It looks and feels like it's been coated in cooking fat Envy

I'm 38 (yesterday!) so it's unlikely to be perimenopause I thought? But possibly hormonal in cause (isn't everything?). I have a very dry flaky scalp to boot so it's almost impossible to know what products to try. I've tried cider vinegar rinse but the greasy patches have spread since then so that put me off doing it again. Sometimes when blow drying my hair I realise it's still greasy so end up washing it again over the bath.

My hair is dyed and I wash it every other day and always have. I use shampoo, condition the ends only, then shampoo again. Currently using t-gel sensitive shampoo for 1st go and the kids child's farm SLS free one for the second.

It's really getting me down and any suggestions are welcomed Sad

Try washing up liquid- it really works!

Misty9 · 12/01/2019 22:10

It's pricey but joico clarifying shampoo (the one for swimming) really cleans greasy hair. Or t gel greasy hair formula

onlymyselftoanswerto1 · 12/01/2019 22:13

Have you tried putting shampoo on before wetting your hair? That allows the grease to break down first, then rinse off and shampoo/condition as normal.

namechangedforanon · 12/01/2019 22:14

Mine is getting like this too at the moment ! No idea what is going on with it :(

Branleuse · 12/01/2019 22:17

Try elvive clay shampoo

edwardcullensotherwoman · 12/01/2019 22:17

Fairy liquid is great for removing grease, it's a bit like a clarifying shampoo. However it would be a bit harsh every other day, so I'd say you should invest in a good quality clarifying shampoo.

Other things that could help to discourage grease (which comes from overproductive sebaceous glands) would be not to massage/rub in the shampoo for too long or too hard - the pressure stimulates the glands so you want to avoid this where possible.
Heat also stimulates sebaceous glands so try using a cooler water, especially for the last rinse.
I've been there, greasy hair is so difficult!

kateemo · 12/01/2019 22:20

Your scalp is overproducing oil because you've dyed it. It's just trying to reach equilibrium. Best to stop dyeing, but if you don't want to then actually give your scalp some good oil like argan or jojoba.

sollyfromsurrey · 12/01/2019 22:25

I remember going through this at some point. Can't remember what I did and it obviously stopped.

mummyhaschangedhername · 12/01/2019 22:26

Washing up liquid will take the grease out but it may strip the colour. I have used it a few times when my hair has been crazy greasy and it definitely works, them use something mild to counteract it.

BabloHoney · 12/01/2019 22:26

Mine sometimes looks greasy straight after washing if I use too much shampoo / conditioner or don’t rinse for long enough. My hairdresser told me you only need shampoo amount they size of a 50p to get a decent wash, lather then rinse really well with the water as cold as you can stand it!

dottybutterfly · 12/01/2019 22:29

I had this!! I was using cheap shampoo and changed to tresemme and got my shine back!! ( not saying you use cheap shampoo ) a change might help!!
Happy birthday for yesterday xx

sollyfromsurrey · 12/01/2019 22:30

It could be silicone build up or yes, hormones.

PinotAndPlaydough · 12/01/2019 22:33

I got this not long after having my second chile, was dying it or doing anything different. I used bicarbonate of soda with a tony amount of shampoo and no conditioner. It helped it look less greasy but was quite dull, went away completely in the end but took a few months I think.

buckleten · 12/01/2019 22:35

I have had this, and I think I overcompensated by washing it more and more, which made it worse. If you can, leave it alone and don't wash it for a couple of days, then try with tresemme 24 hour body shampoo or herbal essences, that sorted mine out.

dontticklethetoad · 12/01/2019 22:42

I had this!
It's a type of seborrhoeic dermatitis. Apparently it doesn't necessarily have to be itchy and flakey. Mine started off with greasy, almost waxy patches but does end up itchy if I wash my hair too much.
Polytar or t-gel shampoo was recommended and sorted it out almost instantly. I apply to my hair and scalp, leave on whilst I shower the rest of myself then rinse.
I now use it as needed (maybe once or twice a month) and use Dr Organics activated charcoal shampoo the rest of the time.

Misty9 · 12/01/2019 23:51

Thanks all. I was using tresemme shampoo and conditioner before this - and I've been dyeing my hair (highlights) for years so I don't think it's just that. Will try the t-gel coaltar shampoo next I think. I've got so many bottles cluttering up my bathroom already! I did wonder about sebhorreic dermatitis as my mum has this and both dc suffer from cradle cap still as school aged kids.

I had the same. It was a build up of silicone. Shampooing with washing up liquid removed it but a clarifying shampoo probably would have been a better idea.

purplecorkheart · 13/01/2019 00:17

I have no idea if this works or not or how it affects coloured hair but I have read adding salt grains to your shampoo can help.

I can suggest other than the clarifying, also watch a couple of youtube videos of how hair is shampooed in a salon, I find using the massage techniques used in Salon means I get an extra day or two out of my hair wash

Bloomini · 13/01/2019 10:50

I'd stop doing the second shampoo. Especially if you're using a kids one. They make my hair really greasy too and I've got dyed hair that I wash every other day too.

You also need to change your shampoo temporarily then you can go back to your previous one. Use a clarifying shampoo.

The Aussie Mega shampoo worked brilliantly for me so do try it. I felt miserable when my hair was greasy after washing too so good luck!

conhill · 13/01/2019 11:02

Mine goes like this, especially when using sls free shampoo. Try a very dilute vinegar rinse - so a tablespoon of cider vinegar in a litre of cold water - after you shampoo and condition. This seems to sort it for me.

Misty9 · 13/01/2019 11:31

Well I'm about to try washing it in the bath so I can really make sure it's all washed. I'll use my usual tresemme and see what happens...

OP this was happening to me - really heavy random places of grease in my hair after washing, looked like loads of wax or something had been combed through it which led me to narrow it down to one of 2 things:

  • my husband and son had been rubbing off the excess hair wax in my towel after doing their hair in the morning - they admitted they had been doing this!
  • too much fabric conditioner in towel wash and not being rinsed out enough/washer too full

Now they have stopped using my towel to rub off excess hair wax and i have not been using fabric conditioner in the towel wash. Problem gone.

KatharinaRosalie · 13/01/2019 12:42

Clarifying shampoo. Redken Cleansing Cream is really good.

dudsville · 13/01/2019 17:38

I've gone crispy dry with age, maybe your hormones at late 30's are doing a final surge of youthfulness!
