Really greasy hair after washing

Misty9 · 12/01/2019 21:57

For a while now my hair was often noticeably greasy underneath after washing. It was just one patch behind my ear, but now it is on the top of my head and underneath at the back. It looks and feels like it's been coated in cooking fat Envy

I'm 38 (yesterday!) so it's unlikely to be perimenopause I thought? But possibly hormonal in cause (isn't everything?). I have a very dry flaky scalp to boot so it's almost impossible to know what products to try. I've tried cider vinegar rinse but the greasy patches have spread since then so that put me off doing it again. Sometimes when blow drying my hair I realise it's still greasy so end up washing it again over the bath.

My hair is dyed and I wash it every other day and always have. I use shampoo, condition the ends only, then shampoo again. Currently using t-gel sensitive shampoo for 1st go and the kids child's farm SLS free one for the second.

It's really getting me down and any suggestions are welcomed Sad

Washnitnusing a bar of Dove Soap. I do it semi regularly and it seems to help the grease.

Misty9 · 13/01/2019 20:06

dudsville that would be nice!

Update: I washed it in the bath with Aldi clarifying shampoo (lacura?) then tresemme conditioner on the tips then rinsed with clean cool water from the shower. And.... no grease!!!!

I'm not sure it's practical to have baths instead of showers but I will as much as possible. I don't use fabric conditioner and no one uses hair wax- but good suggestions.

My head actually feels lighter!

Tresemme shampoo leaves my hair disgusting :/ it’s grim stuff, and I am an ex hairdresser - did they REALLY use that shit in salons?

BakewellTart01 · 13/01/2019 20:09

I used to have this a lot. I switched to shampoo soap. I did it to get rid of plastic, but it has made my hair softer, shinnier and i only need to wash every 4 days as apposed to 2. I bought mine of amazon.

strawberryredhead · 13/01/2019 20:11

Clarifying shampoo. Use once a week, it gets rid of all the greasy build up. Worked for me. If you google it you can also find home made versions that are things like lemon juice in water.
If you live in a hard water area, that could be causing it.

strawberryredhead · 13/01/2019 20:12

Oh I just saw you successfully used clarifying shampoo - hurrah!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 13/01/2019 20:18

@BakewellTart01 can you link to the soap shampoo?

BakewellTart01 · 13/01/2019 21:07

This is what I have been using

Shampoo Bar

Also the conditioner bar from the same company

Limaloma1 · 13/01/2019 21:13

I get this if i use/hairdressers use any oil based hair products. Previously i had been paying hairdressers to use some clarifying shampoo on my hair, then I read about rubbing some bicarbonate of soda into my hair and it works!

Jupiter13 · 13/01/2019 21:13

Cut your hair really short...this might help..😃

Chesneyhawkes1 · 13/01/2019 22:09

I get greasy roots but dry ends. Been using Hask Charcoal shampoo and conditioner. Seems to be doing the trick.

Babygrey7 · 13/01/2019 22:11

Wrong shampoo

You need a a shampoo that eliminates build-up (silicons and oils etc)

For me that is Aussie mega shampoo, the original one.

crimsonlake · 13/01/2019 22:57

I have always suffered from greasy hair although ironically I have very dry skin. I go through periods when after shampooing my hair is still greasy underneath, you name it and I have tried it, even carbolic soap, nothing works. I certainly would not recommend washing your hair in the bath. Tresemme is useless and is to be avoided, I always alternate my shampoos. Dry shampoo is your friend basically, dont fiddle with it and tie it back.

cessie322 · 13/01/2019 23:00

I agree with the seborrheic dermatitis comment. I had it as well and tried everything over 18 months, clarifying shampoo, washing up liquid, Tgel, you name it. What shifted it in the end was Nizoral shampoo, I could see the difference after one wash. I used it twice or three times a week to begin with and I now I use it once a week. I think it's great stuff. You buy it at the pharmacy counter.

justasking111 · 13/01/2019 23:09

Teenage son with uber straight greasy hair. We would nag him to wash it, he swore he was. At Boots a couple of weeks ago, saw T Gel, bought that for him. Well what a difference, his hair is lovely clean soft and grease free. The only other time we see it like that is on holidays when he is in the pool all day.

My Mum had long dark hair and swore by the occasional fairy liquid use. She also used vinegar, anyone else remember that?

Livpool · 13/01/2019 23:10

I use the Herbal Essence clarifying shampoo every other wash - followed by OGX argan oil shampoo. My hair is highlighted (bleach) and around my period I get VERY greasy hair. Usually it is quite dry

FlumpyMummy · 14/01/2019 06:45

Use sulphate free shampoo
Turn head upside down for rinse

proseccoaficionado · 14/01/2019 06:59

OP, I never heard someone who does shampoo-conditioner-shampoo.

  1. Invest in a great shampoo/conditioner (see brands such as wella, joico, etc). They seem expensive but you also use it a lot, they're normally big bottles.
  2. When you do the first shampoo do it on your dry hair, then second one, then conditioner and RINSE A LOT. Rinse, rinse, rinse, about 5 minutes so you're sure it's all gone. Also, be careful with the water: not too hot!
crimsonlake · 14/01/2019 10:07

From reading this and what has worked for some people, it is clear that what works for some will not work for others. I have tried T gel and Nizoral and countless others, scoured the internet and nothing worked. Sulphate free made my hair greasier, bicarb also did not work. The only thing that is news to me is the Charcoal so I will be looking out for this.

NekoShiro · 14/01/2019 10:34

Try cutting out the second shampoo? Might be stripping to many oils out of your hair/scalp and your body is working in overdrive to replace them

Perfectly1mperfect · 14/01/2019 10:40

I think the people who said seborrheic dermatitis are right. It's not like a normal grease, it's like a waxy sticky coating. You need something like Nizoral shampoo, there's probably others, ask the pharmacist.

RosinaAlmaviva · 14/01/2019 10:49

I've had this off and on over the past couple of years. Fairy Liquid didn't help. I now alternate T-gel and Nizoral (via Amazon subscription). Strangely enough, Femfresh body wash, which I used in desperation one day having run out of shampoo, does quite a good job of cleaning my hair. Switching frequently helps so I will be checking out the clarifying shampoos PP have mentioned as I haven't tried any of those.

FloofyDoof · 14/01/2019 12:16

I have hair that goes greasy really fast, I now use this Kerastase shampoo for oily roots and dry ends, and can get away with washing my hair every other day, instead of every day now. A bottle lasts ages too.

Misty9 · 15/01/2019 17:40

Another update:

Washed it in the bath again today (as soon as in so not dirty water) same routine with shampoo - and no waxy/greasy residue afterwards!! I really think it's the thorough rinse it gets in the bath which is helping.

Argh, the saga continues Sad

After a particularly bad experience with a new shampoo bar (looked like I'd dipped my head in a chip pan) I had some success with Travelodge shampoo/body wash this morning.

I'm at the end of my tether with it and it really gets me down when it feels so greasy. Seeing my hairdresser on weds so will get her advice Sad - and cut it all off so there's less to get greasy!
