Really greasy hair after washing

For a while now my hair was often noticeably greasy underneath after washing. It was just one patch behind my ear, but now it is on the top of my head and underneath at the back. It looks and feels like it's been coated in cooking fat Envy

I'm 38 (yesterday!) so it's unlikely to be perimenopause I thought? But possibly hormonal in cause (isn't everything?). I have a very dry flaky scalp to boot so it's almost impossible to know what products to try. I've tried cider vinegar rinse but the greasy patches have spread since then so that put me off doing it again. Sometimes when blow drying my hair I realise it's still greasy so end up washing it again over the bath.

My hair is dyed and I wash it every other day and always have. I use shampoo, condition the ends only, then shampoo again. Currently using t-gel sensitive shampoo for 1st go and the kids child's farm SLS free one for the second.

It's really getting me down and any suggestions are welcomed Sad

I've just started using charcoal soap, I've definitely noticed a difference!

Did you try anything like Nizoral in the end?

It really does sound like seborrheic dermatitis, it doesn't have to look like dandruff, it can just cause this sticky, waxy, greasy coating.

I haven't - mainly because I don't have room for another bottle in my bathroom! I might pick some up tomorrow though. My mum reckons she has seb derm and she thinks the dc ongoing issues with cradle cap (aged 5 and 7) is that too and its genetic? Sad

I have very thick, quite coarse hair and a lot of it. I don't really get a greasy scalp but it doesn't half itch when it's ready for washing. Last year, I noticed it had only really begun to itch in one area so asked my hairdresser to look at it. She said it was a bit red and scaly and advised head and shoulders. I was using Body Shop Ginger at the time and that helped but I then bought the H&S specialist stuff for scalps, there are 2 and that clears it up quite quickly. It does keep coming back though. I think there Neutrogena one is good too, but smells of cold tar soap. In general, I find shampoo with sulfates etc excacerbate ot

Which Tresemme were you using? For years I have used the green clarifying one, but have had to start dyeing my hair to cover the greys, so I switched to the red one for coloured hair. Within a couple of weeks I had a big patch at the side or my head that was constantly greasy and heavy. I have gone back to the clarifying one and my hair has gone back to normal (took a few washes though).

menopause can cause your hair to look very greasy after a night of hot flashes.

Misty9 · 20/01/2019 19:30

I was using body shop ginger shampoo when all this started. Haven't used tresemme shampoo for ages. I tried head and shoulders but it made it worse and my hairdresser said it can be very harsh and best not to use it more than once a week or so.

I have wondered about perimenopause and am also having issues with breakouts with my cycle - but I'm only just 38 so docs have been noncommital...

What helps seb derm if it is that?

I was having the same issues with a greasy itchy scalp and switched to Noughty Care Taker Shampoo and it seems to be doing the trick! It was recommended on another Facebook group for problem scalp and works really well.

What helps seb derm if it is that?

If it is, then you need a shampoo with something like ketaconazole, coal tar or salicylic acid in. Me and my nephew use Nizoral. My nephew got it prescribed but I just bought it over the counter. Theres lots of others but that's the one that worked for us. I think at first I had to use it a couple of times a week but now I just use it every couple of weeks for maintenance. The pharmacist was really helpful and knew exactly what it was when I asked him so maybe try that to make sure you get something suitable as coal rar is quite harsh and doesn't smell great!

yips · 20/01/2019 21:23

Yep clarifying is the way to go, I had this issue before and the neutrogena one did the trick for me instantly.

Perfectly1mperfect · 20/01/2019 21:24

I meant to say I don't have to use it all the time, just if it flares up. Sometimes it goes away for months. Again the pharmacist will be able to advise how often. I hope it works, I know how horrible it feels when your hair never looks clean, even though you've just washed it!

Can I just say I started getting greasy whilst using the body shop ginger shampoo and now it won’t go I’m stuck with greasy hair trying everything

SmileyClare · 31/08/2020 21:26

I used to get this. With me it's a build up of product mainly conditioners I use for my dry hair.

I can't recommend Vosene Original anti dandruff shampoo enough. I think it was recommended on a similar mumsnet thread. It's also cheap (about a pound a bottle in most supermarkets). It strips your hair like nothing else. Use liberally, rinse well and condition the ends only. Blast at the end with really cold water.

The best method for me is leaning over the bath with the shower attachment. That stops conditioner going all over your roots because your head's upside down.

Also alternate shampoos quite often. Your hair seems to get "used" to one brand and never comes as clean after a while. I've no idea of the science behind this but it works for me! Smile

I find creamy shampoos make my hair really greasy and need to use clear one.

Laul96 · 01/09/2020 08:14
