Hair help - I need a 10 yr plan...

So as a kid I had bright red curls (think Annie), but my hair naturally darkened until I hit my current 'brown' in my 20s. But my hair is still a slightly weird colour, with lots of different shades all kind of mixed in.
I've been going grey for a few years, and it's not my favourite. My aunties all had reddish hair, which just faded over the years until they ended up a nice strawberry blonde colour; but it feels like mine is darker.
I thought I might try to lighten it gradually, but I'm shit at going to the hairdressers and only get there once or twice a year, so I'm worried I'll end up with dark/grey roots. But if I try and dye it darker, I'll have weird grey roots!
I have never dyed my hair AT ALL, so it's terrifying. Help!!!!

It's very similar to mine. Which obvs looks amazing,so I'd just leave it.

Just treat your hair to a decent (not mega bucks, just good quality) shampoo and conditioner to keep it in good condition.

I have to admit it but off all the brands I've tried Pantene has been fab.

The most I would suggest is put some highlights in but it looks fine.
