Hair has started to really hurt/ache when in a pony tail

my head/ Hair has started to really hurt/ache when in a pony tail. does anyone have any (easy- my limits are regular plaits) styles that would be less strain on the roots?

I put mine up with a hair clip thingummy- the kind with prongs that you press to open and snaps shut. Dead easy to do. Gather hair into pony tail, twist hair round to make a really long thin line of hair, then coil up into bunnish shape and clip it.

Have also just bought slip silk hair ties/scrunchies (the smaller ones) which feel much less tight than normal hair ties and are supposed to be better for your hair. Eye wateringly expensive though.
