Split Nail Help...any experts about?

I've lived with my split nail for 2 years now and can't find anything to help make it look any better. I constantly have to trim it because it catches on clothes etc. Does anyone know if getting a constant laquer or paint on it will help? I should I use gel or shellac nail to cover it? Anything you can advise would be helpful. It now grows split so there's no repairing it.

Have a look on YouTube - I'm sure I saw someone using a bit of tea bag material and clear nail varnish!!

Ooh thanks...I shall have a look!

Oh I'm prone to them, they're awful, aren't they. I've just managed to grow one out. I cut it almost every day, taking just a tiny sliver to keep it as short as possible, used Opi original nail envy (recommended on here) and kept my nails painted all the time. I still keep my nails painted all the time (regular polish). If I go without, I end up with another split.

The tea bag thing didn't work for me unfortunately.

...and keep cutting it for a couple of weeks even after it looks like it's grown out.

Try flexitol foot balm as hand cream. I use it on my cuticle area and it's amazing. I've just taken gel polish off with acitone after 4 weeks of manicure and my nails are good.

I have a nail that grows through split like that, also been like it for a couple of years. I keep it polished as much as I can to keep the end sealed and stop it catching on things but nothing seems to actually improve it. It's so frustrating, I don't even know how it started!

I found OPI made my peeling/split nails worse, I swear by Nailtiques, best thing I’ve ever done for my nails. There’s different formulas depending on what you need.

I have a nail like that on my thumb. Nail polish doesn't work because it just splits along with the nail. You could try a bit of tea bag and superglue. It'll go bumpy but you can use a nail buffer to smooth it down.

Another thing worth trying is the Orly nail repair kit. It uses superglue and a powder. You push your cuticles back and clean and dehydrate your nails with acetone then paint your nail with glue and dip into the powder. It hardens pretty quickly. You'll need to buff the shape afterwards, and you can polish on top.

I tried every nail strengthener ever recommended on my thin peeling nails and nothing ever stopped them breaking below the free edge. I ended up learning how to do gel nails. For the split nail, I use a bit of nail silk between two layers of foundation gel, plus a layer of structure gel, under the colour. It's not a cheap hobby to get into but if you're going for gels anyway you can save the cost of the lamp, gels, acetone etc fairly quickly. Halo's a good brand, reasonably priced and professional standard although you don't need a licence to buy them.

My nails split a lot, i am taking Biotin to try to strengthen them, which is helping i think, but i put a bit of superglue on the split until it grows out
