am I too late for brogues?

I feel like I need some brogues in my life, but am I five years too late?

If I wouldn't look too dated in principle, would you recommend patent black or standard black for wearing with black tights and a work dress please?

I think they’re back aren’t they?

Tea16 · 05/01/2019 23:20

Oooh following. Its got to be patent ones i think.

squee123 · 05/01/2019 23:22

Well I just bought some patent Derbys in November so I really hope the androgenous look isn't over (brogues are just the ones with holes).

Floisme · 06/01/2019 09:40

I’ve always worn them and I’m slightly pissed off that they’ve become fashionable as it means they’ll inevitably fall out of fashion at some point, even if it hasn’t happened just yet. But hopefully, once the dust has settled, they’ll go back to being just under the radar where they used to be. So I wouldn’t be put off if you like them.

Floisme · 06/01/2019 09:42

Sorry I missed the second question. I love patent but if you’re worried about them dating then plain black or tan are more classic.

Sitranced · 06/01/2019 10:17

Brogues won't go out of style.

BubblesBuddy · 06/01/2019 12:01

Brogues are a style statement. They are about you, not fashion! I’ve had brogues for years. I like them with ankle grazers. Show a bit of coloured tights!

Every year you can buy brogues! I actually like patent black but I have suede too. Definitely avoid tan leather! You need them a bit quirky with coloured laces for example. Brogue ankle boots look good too.

MarshaBradyo · 06/01/2019 12:02

Brogues are more a style thing I.e. if you have that style they are always fine

Floisme · 06/01/2019 12:14

Nah, I like tan leather and I think it goes with a lot of stuff when black doesn't. But then I'm not keen personally on the quirky touches. I do have one metallic and one multicoloured pair but I think these will date the most and, for the most part, I prefer my brogues old school.

thedevilinablackdress · 06/01/2019 14:42

Brogues are a classic. They may be more 'in fashion' at the moment, but they are never out of style.

Trills · 06/01/2019 14:53

Definitely agree that brogues are about "your style" .

It helps that they are in fashion now because that means they're more easily available, and there's a greater variety of them around.

If they go with your personal style, then they'll still look right even when they're not in fashion.

That said, I bought mine a year or two ago after they were recommended on a thread that described them as being "shoes for primary school teachers". So clearly some people care more than me about whether they are in fashion...

Passthecake30 · 06/01/2019 19:01

I wear them for work with skirt and tights or a dress. I like them as they hold my orthotics in rather than being anything about style Grin

louderthan · 06/01/2019 21:59

I have a classic black and white spiv pair that I've worn to death. Brogues will always be cool.

WineNotTea · 06/01/2019 22:45

You are never too late for brogues, I have quite a few pairs, all are patent except for my brogue ankle boots which are just plain black and which I love.
I keep seeing adverts from a company that does two tone brogues and I’m seriously tempted to buy a pair or two.
