I fell into trap of home dye, so have dark (almost black) ends, mid brown middle section and probably of am honest 40- 50% grey at roots.

My last trip to hairdressers was three months go who said because of grey, would need permanent dye for coverage.

I think I would like to go lighter (lighter brown, not blonde)

where do I start!!!

The trouble with going light brown over grey is you end up with that weird almost green tone after a few washes. Also it won't make the regrowth any more manageable (bitter experience ). The best thing is a proper salon job with highlights etc but this is expensive and your roots will still appear after 3 weeks but breaking up the colour with highlights makes it less badger like. I gave up a few years ago and am now silver. It is obviously not as nice as being brunette but I do get lots of compliments and enjoy not giving up so much headspace, time and money to maintaining my hair.

I don't have highlights now I am grey. The lightness of your highlights depends on the look you want, best to discuss with a hairdresser really
