Canadian Winter Wedding - Help needed

I'm hoping someone can offer some advice, my youngest cousin is getting married in March and I really need to find a decent dress (and understand if there are any big no no's that differ from british weddings)

It's an evening wedding, with a formal/cocktail dress code, and the bridal party are all wearing navy.

My first issue is that most of my existing wardrobe is navy, so would navy with a bright floral print be a big no no?

Also, I assume black is out as it's a wedding?

I'm 40, with a body that looks like it's had 2 kids, droopy upper arms, still a fair bit of belly and general body padding, so any ideas on how best to not look like a frumpy older relative would be wonderful.

I would avoid the navy. I'm not sure black is off the table though as it being an evening wedding. What sort of style do you like? Midi maxi? Sleeves?

Will any part of the wedding be outdoors? Ie do you need to dress for warmth as well as style?

What about something like this?

Hi there. Where in Canada is the wedding? This might dictate both the likely temperature and level of formality e.g. Vancouver vs. Montreal are very different

Really need to know where. Just like everywhere else in the world, there is a huge variety of wedding types... some are a lot more informal (extremely expensive half way up a mountain chic), and some big city venues comparatively high fashion. I can’t help with the latter but recently saw a nice pair of hiking boots on a silk clad granny.

Thanks everyone, The wedding is in Toronto, although both the bride and groom live in LA, just their families are based in Canada, hence the wedding being there.

I love the lindyhop style dresses that are about at the moment, but I feel they're too casual for this sort of wedding. I prefer Midi Dresses, and preferably something with sleeves, although I'm happy to wear a pashmina or bolero. Would a smart jumpsuit be acceptable? I've seen a lovely green/teal one, that I would feel very comfortable in.

I would say a jumpsuit is perfect if you make it look suitable for evening. Tess Daly has worn one on Strictly. Personally for winter I would prefer dark green or burgundy but if you glam it up with dismante or gold it will be great. Add a lovely evening bag.

I would also look for a velvet trouser suit. This would be very smart if you put a sparkly top underneath and wore good jewellery.

Have a look at Poetry and Hobbs night have something in the sale. Jaeger might also have something in the sale. I would avoid black and navy.

I have just looked at the Whistles sale. They have some great winter dresses in the sale which are midi and would be suitable for an evening do. A few of the long ones are great.

@FirmlyRooted I love that, would that be formal enough?

I've spotted a couple of things which I like - would love some thoughs if you have the time

This is the Navy one I fell in love with - but fear it's too close to the bridal party
