What to wear with wide-legged trousers?

I never wear any trousers other than jeans (because they usually look rubbish on me) but have just bought two pairs of wide-legged ones that actually look good. I was semi-inspired by Emily Mortimer's wardrobe in Mary Poppins Returns!

Bit stumped as to footwear to go with them though. I wear ankle boots or Converse with my jeans but am wondering if a trainer with a slightly thicker sole (a la Trinny Woodall) would look good? Or should I go down the brogues route? Boots just don't seem right and loafers take me back to the mid-90s!

They look great, Boden is fab for basics.

OP what brand are your trainers?

SpiritedLondon · 02/01/2019 21:33

I wouldn’t say they were that wide either.... more of a straight leg to me. For me the shoe is dependent on what look you’re going for and what else you’ll be wearing. An androgynous look could take a brogue or trainer but more ladylike then a shoe with a somewhat pointed toe. If you’re bothered about trends then a block heel would be better than a slim heel.

@AndromedaPerseus The ones in the photo are just my gym trainers, I wouldn't wear them anywhere else! They're by Mizuno and I've had them for years. I'm on the lookout for some Nikes with fairly thick soles but take size 9 in trainers so usually have to buy men's.
