Growing out highlights.

After advice, I’ve had my (quite dark) hair highlighted for a few years. I’m costcutting, so highlights have to go, but I now have horrible roots.
Is there anything I can do? Last time I put a red through, but I don’t really want a red through it.
Thanks

Put a colour through it that closely matches your own hair. Red is not for everyone.

I had balayage done so the roots are dark and the ends blonde (there are other versions of this look - ombré, root drag etc), then gradually there is less blonde and eventually you get all the blonde cut off if you want. It's a gradual thing but not as much of a shock to the system. As it was, I've found this look so low maintenance that I only get it done three times a year and it still looks fine, despite me having quite dark hair naturally and the balayage is quite blonde.

The trouble is that it’s so naturally dark, and it’s very blonde with the highlights, won’t it go green if I put through my normal colour. I like the sound of ombré etc but I have about an inch and a half of root, on hair that’s down to my shoulder blades. It’s like reverse ombré 😂

This is my hair, so you know what I mean. I had this done at the end of November, but previously it was done in July and really didn't look all that different even after months.

Well I had a very few highlights through mine to hide the growout line. I have grey and very dark hair so a nightmare.

magpie, gorgeous. Yes definitely get a root drag but go to the hairdresser so that it won't go green - it's definitely the easist way to grow out highlights and will look amazing.

It’s got to be something I can do myself, I just can’t afford the hairdresser atm :(.
