Straight hair gone wavy? Wtf?!!

I’ve had long straight hair my entire life...so straight that I once had a perm in my teens and it dropped within a few days and was dead straight again. Now I’ve hit my forties....it’s gone wavy?! just at the back? Straight front and sides and waves all down the back that just looks frizzy Confused. Anyone else had this?! Where has my lovely straight hair gone? Is this a thing?!

Hair is weird I had ringlets until I had a baby then it went wavy then straight

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 01/01/2019 09:46

Do you dye your hair? Could this be a patch of greys that you haven’t spotted under the dye?

Baffledmummy · 01/01/2019 09:50

I do get my hair coloured...a semi permanent every couple of months at the hairdressers. I’ve quite a few grays but mostly at the hairline. These are quite distinct waves that have appeared over the last few months. I wouldn’t mind so much if it was all over my head but I’ve got this weird half straight and half wavy thing going on!

This happened to me at about 35 - I assumed the ageing process, hormones most likely. Had to totally review the products I use, and spend a lot more time styling the front, although my hairdresser has helped me to learn to work with the wave a bit better.

PipGoesPop · 01/01/2019 09:53

This happened to me after I had my first child, late 30s. Could be hormones?

Mominatrix · 01/01/2019 09:59

Definitely hormonal. Keep an eye on signs of thyroid hormone imbalance or it could be a sign of a relative increase in androgens, ie an indication that you are moving towards menopause.

Sausagefingers9 · 01/01/2019 10:04

I have exactly the same but I’m late 20s. Had straight hair forever and now the back is kink central.

I’ve tried to encourage the rest of my hair to go wavy too as I just can’t get the back bit to ever be straight.

Mine has changed in the last few years due to pregnancy. It was straight and full of moisture , now it's wavy and dries easily.

The best advice I can give you is to work with what you've got. Make sure you use lots of conditioner and try using a wide tooth comb instead of a brush to help keep your hair from fizzing. Also get a good leave in conditioner to fix any frizz on the go.

Thyroid is interesting...I had Graves’ disease a few years back that was successfully treated...perhaps that has kicked things off. I guess I need to get used to styling waves now!

About 6 members of my family ( including me) changed our hair at puberty!
Straight to very wavy/curly! Grin

EKGEMS · 02/01/2019 02:53

My hair had a little wave when I was young but as I get into my mid thirties and older I now have curly hair and ringlets-I even had a work colleague say she wanted "natural curls like mine" and I wanted to tell her I didn't know how the hell I ended up with curly hair myself!! (I have an identical twin with nowhere near the same curl)

chatwoo · 02/01/2019 03:09

Yeah this happened to me as well. Not sure when exactly, probably mid- to late-30s.

I thought it was because I used to colour it a lot but maybe it is just one of those things ... mine is wavy all over but more so at the back, maybe because I don't bother to style it very well there (I sometimes spot the back and think 'what a mess'). And of course the cursed gray hairs and their coarseness don't help either!

flumpybear · 02/01/2019 03:22

Yep same as a PP where hair went wavy after I had my children, and I developed hay fever too - all very odd

FeralBeryl · 02/01/2019 03:36

Yep same here, I actually got full refunds in my teens from failed perms. Interestingly eyelash perms won't hold on me either.
I had very long thick pin straight hair, it's now an 80's Demi wave when wet Grin
Mine was after a personal trauma, along the lines of 'going white overnight' but curls instead, very odd, I have Hashimotos but well controlled.

Peri menopausal night sweats?

thethoughtfox · 02/01/2019 11:59

Happened to me at puberty

Cherries101 · 02/01/2019 12:01

I have thyroid disease and when untreated my normally curly but smooth hair becomes a mess of frizz. Push for a full thyroid panel — you may need your meds adjusting.
