How do you lace up your Dr Martens Boots?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 31/12/2018 15:52

DH gave me a pair of Dr Martens Boots for Christmas and I'm keen to break them in but the laces that came with them seem quite short for the boot..,
If I lace them like I would trainers for instance (crossing over each hole) then I end up with only a cm or 2 and the top to tie them up, am I doing it wrong or shall I buy longer laces?

I'm aware I'm woefully uncool and not 'with it' when it comes to fashion so forgive me if there's an obvious solution that I'm missing, my shoes are far more sensible and have zips and nickels usually Grin

I cross mine over too. I stop one hole from the top. Does that give you better length? No idea if it is the trendy way to do it or not, but I've been doing mine that way for about 30 years!

Sounds like you are doing it right. I stop one hole from the top and find the laces are quite short but I can do them up. I find to break them in, rather than wear them immediately I scrunched up a load of newspaper and stuff them into the boot, packing the toe area tightly for a couple of days. Then I wear them around the house for an hour or so (soles not damaged so can take them back if they don't fit), for a few days, putting the paper back in the after each wear. Really helps to break them in.

Crossed as they came and stop 2 from the top , just got a new pair of pascals virginia , so soft and comfy straight away , my old smooth ones took ages to get comfy

We're walking a mile to our friends tonight. I am gutted that I can either wear comfortable shoes or wear my new cherry reds and annihilate my ankles even further as they're not broke in yet.

I shall stop 1 from the top and see how I get on, I have been wearing them around all afternoon and haven't yet felt any discomfort. Mine are vegan purple chrome ones and I love them! DH has got me something I longed for but never had from my adolescence every hear as a tradition, these are that this year. I'm over the moon! My 14 year old self feels unstoppable. Grin

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 31/12/2018 19:42

I've got a pair of the vegan purple chrome (as well as far too may other pairs!), they are fabulous.

whatswithtodaytoday · 31/12/2018 19:44

I stop two from the top. Mine are purple glitter, I bought them for my inner 16 year old goth 😁

smurfy2015 · 31/12/2018 19:48

Would this link help - www.yournextshoes.com/lace-dr-martens/

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 31/12/2018 20:15

I've got the vegan purple chrome, they are beautiful. I bought baby pink laces for mine😎 I criss cross the laces and stop one row before the top.

hugoagogo · 31/12/2018 21:51

I do it like in the link.

Minesril · 01/01/2019 09:24

I didn't know you were supposed to stop one row before the top! Shock
My new ones come with ribbon as an alternative Grin

Crimbobimbo · 01/01/2019 09:25

Are the vegan ones more comfortable and easier to break in?

frugalkitty · 01/01/2019 10:03

My 13 year old DD has cream vegan ones, complete with lilac glitter! They haven't needed breaking in, she was ok with them from the off. My DH has said repeatedly that they go against everything DMs are meant to stand for, but she absolutely loves them and they really suit her!

I've found Ian's Shoelace Site really helpful. This link gives a step by step guide to straight bar lacing which frees up 28% of the lace length www.fieggen.com/shoelace/straightbarlacing.htm

I don't know how many pairs of eyelets you have on your boots, but you can adjust the instructions on that page accordingly.

You might also want to look at CommandoLacing on the same website which says it results in 152% gain in lace length.
