Long hair - up or straight down?

So this might be a silly question. I desperately want my hair a lot longer than it is and am really trying to look after it. Obv I know you need to limit heat on it but also that you shouldn't do up your hair in tight pony tail cause the band harms your hair. So would I be better straightening it once after washing it and then keeping it down for next 3/4 days or not straightening it and keeping it up? I normally do a pony tail and then use a donut to make a bun. Any other ways to do your hair?

I can't see it making a huge difference to be honest, but I'm not an expert. I truly believe in regular trims though

I think you're over thinking it.
