I want to buy my Mother a candle for her birthday but I'm on a post-Christmas budget of up to £20. Unfortunately that rules out certain brands.

Do any of you have any recommendations?

For that budget you could get a couple of yankee products, asda sell them

Thank you , they look perfect.

I was thinking of Jo Malone initially and assumed I'd get one for £20. I was very wrong.

Aldi candles keep apparing in my searches. Are they good quality?

Appearing

Groupon and Amazon always have loads of Yankee on offer. People are very snobby about them but I love them. (for some reason the red coloured ones smell nicer and last longer than the non-red ones!)

huggybear · 27/12/2018 19:44

I'd go White Co personally if you are thinking JM.

starrynight19 · 27/12/2018 19:45

You will get a white company one , some lovely ones in the sale

ThomasHardyPerennial · 27/12/2018 19:45

You can get a small Neom candle for around £16. The 'real luxury' scent is absolutely gorgeous!

OneStepMoreFun · 27/12/2018 19:45

I'm not so keen on Yankee candles. They smell artificial to me. Some of the smaller soy wax companies have gorgeous candles made only with essential oils. or you could try Heals, John Lewis or White Company sales. They all do lovely ones at a fraction of Jo Malone prices.

Whatififall · 27/12/2018 19:46

I don’t like the Aldi candles, I don’t think the smell projects or lasts long. However, other people I know rave about them.

Are you near a TK Maxx? They sell loads of different brands, not necessarily famous one, but they have plenty of candles in lovely packaging. I also got a This Works Sleep candle for £12.99 there rather than the £25 it normally would be.

Havana7 · 27/12/2018 19:46

I agree I have a white company one and it’s lovely

LeafCutterAnt · 27/12/2018 19:46

I like Woodwick

peeblet · 27/12/2018 19:47

ive just got a wonderwick one and smells lovely / looks posh.

RJnomore1 · 27/12/2018 19:49

These sets are £22.50 in the white company sale so a tiny bit over budget, but would be a lovely present.

I've linked to rhubarb because I love it but there are a few scents in the sale

KeysHairbandNotepad · 27/12/2018 19:50

Some great ideas here , I have John Lewis and white company nearby so I'll see what I can find.

I'm leaning more towards Yankee candle as my mum likes bright clashing colours in her home.

White Company ‘Winter’ is my favourite. Beautiful at this time of year.

flugelhorn811 · 27/12/2018 19:50

Agree with a PP about trying TK Maxx and the This Works ones are very nice.

If you do want something fancier, the small Diptyque ones are £25 and they're lovely.

beanaseireann · 27/12/2018 19:55

Try Max Benjamin candles on Amazon. Their Enchanted Paths or Maldives smell lovely.

I have a Yankee large jar - Egyptian Musk which smells very nice but it leaves a very dark, sooty black ring around the inside of the jar- I don't think that is good.

DontFundHate · 27/12/2018 20:03

Do the jo Malone Xmas candles ever go on sale? That could be an idea

KeysHairbandNotepad · 27/12/2018 20:16

A Woodwick would look good in her living room , lots of lovely colours and interesting sounding scents there.

Your posts have educated me , and also talked me down from the shock of venturing into Jo Malone. I had no idea that wax could cost so much. I'm sure there's a reason for their pricing though.

I have Parks candles and Jo Malone and I think my Parks ones smell nicer and the fragrance is more intense. You can get a decent sized one for around a tenner in TK Maxx. Don’t get the giant ones with 3 Wicks though - mine burnt really unevenly and I had to chuck it with loads of wax still in it - so annoying

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/12/2018 20:30

John Lewis have really nice candles in the sale today - I was in store, but I am sure they will be online. Otherwise I am another White Company fan, have Winter burning right now, and the rhubarb one linked above is glorious.

KeysHairbandNotepad · 28/12/2018 12:01

I've ordered a parks gift set with 3 scented candles and a difuser.

Thank you for all of your suggestions.

Parks candles are lovely. Especially the Parks Original. They also do a Hyacinth candle which smells just like hyacinth which is so nice.

BrassicaBabe · 28/12/2018 20:21

I love True Grace. John Lewis did them in tin before Xmas for £30. My fav is Moroccan Rose. Floral but rich and deep.
