Very dark brown hair going grey. Which box dye?

Hi,

So I've used the casting creme in mahogany before, but that was before the grey kicked in. It looked quite nice after a few washes, but was initially too dark. I'm very pale and yeah...not a good look.

I also tried the Iced chocolate one, which is probably more subtle. Possibly too subtle, but given my main objective now is covering the grey, subItle is probably ok.

I've thought about mixing the two, but I've never done this before, so don't know how easy that is to do.

Any other recommendations? My hair is quite dry and heat damaged, so something conditioning is definitely essential.

I really don't want to start dying my hair now, as I know that will be it. I'll need to commit, as I just wouldn't suit grey. Plus I'm only 34.

I should add, I'm heading at the door very shortly to Boots, so please post your suggestions quickly! Grin

TIA

I use olia but mines a mid Brown I’ve used lots of different box colours though and found this one keeps my hair in best condition.

No advice but casting creme iced chocolate sounds like I should try it. I have just a few (increasing rapidly) grey hairs and want to take the edge of them. I have very dark brown hair which I like a lot so don’t want to turn the mostly nice brown into something flat. And don’t want to drop £80 every 2 months at a salon.

jennymac · 12/12/2018 13:51

I have very dark brown hair and use Nice N Easy. I can't remember what colour but the darkest brown before the black colour. I think it is pretty good.

laurajohnny · 12/12/2018 13:55

I am the same colouring as you OP and I use casting iced cocoa or iced truffle to cover the grey. I used to wear iced chocolate but found that as it faded the greys had a gingery touch to them that didn't suit me. Iced cocoa and iced truffle are cooler toned and look more natural for me. Iced cocoa is darker and I tend to use it in the winter; iced truffle in the summer. Hope this helps.

I find Garnier Nutrisse very moisturising and leaves my hair lovely and silky. Dark Quartz would be a good colour for you it covers my greys and lasts for ages!

I know it's not what you are asking but I have dark brown hair and years of dying over grey hairs left it basically black and the roots come through so quickly. I've had a dark blonde balayage done and I don't dye the roots anymore and the grays blend in with the balayage. The upkeep isn't expensive either because you don't need to keep getting the roots done as it's meant to look grown out

BlueberryMarshmallow · 12/12/2018 14:18

I use the l’oreal excellence creme in mahogany brown which is a dark brown but has a nice shine to it when the light hits. I’ve tried all different ones but this is my favourite.

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 12/12/2018 14:20

Thanks all!

The dark quartz looks as though it might be a bit too dark from reading some of the reviews. The colour on the box looks gorgeous though!.

I'm going to post a pic to give you an idea of my skin tone and natural hair colour. You can also see the kind of grey I have.

Bear with....

I have same colouring as you and I use the chocolate truffle shade. I really like the colour and I get a lot of compliments on it, even from my hairdresser!
I use the nice n easy root touch up on it in between. Greys come through fast so I do the Choc truffle one maybe every 6 weeks but with the nice n easy at the 3 week point. Sad

Stunning eyes OP Smile

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 12/12/2018 15:53

Right, just got back. I went for the iced truffle. Will be doing the patch test tonight and then do then dye tomorrow. I shall take pics.

Please update! I have slightly lighter brown hair than you and otherwise similar eyes and colouring I think!

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 12/12/2018 16:11

Shall do, time. It's been a few years, so hopefully I won't be completely clueless! It's fairly straightforward, if I remember 🤔

Oh, hang on! I used loads of dry shampoo this morning and just remembered that you don't actually shampoo your hair when dying it, so won't the dry shampoo interact with the dye?

OP posts:
jennymac · 12/12/2018 17:33

I don't think it does. I am pretty sure that I have used dry shampoo on the morning of the day that I dyed my hair recently and it didn't make any difference.

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 13/12/2018 08:57

Jenny, I hope you're right. I put on a lot yesterday 😬 I'm about to get started!

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 13/12/2018 10:20

Wow. I'd forgotten how messy it is and how much product you have to put on your hair. It's so much! I've got long, bra strap length, thick hair, so I don't understand people who say they need to buy two bottles! Shock

Hope it goes well for you. I have the light skin, dark hair thing too and tend to end up rocking the goth look with a lot of dyes. I've found the 4 1/2 shade in Garnier Nutrisse give the most natural look. They also do a 4.5 one, but look for the 1/2, not everywhere does it.

LeslieYep · 13/12/2018 10:37

I realise you've already started, but I'm another olia user, either 4.0 or 4.15

Also, I only ever do my roots and don't run it through the lengths - unless it's a first time dye and you have inches of grey hair!

My hair dresser complimented me on it looking naturally coloured as running the box dyes through the middle and ends, over the same colour again and again really builds up the dye.

I find it fades slightly, but just gives it a more natural look.

ThePurpleOneIsOverrated · 13/12/2018 14:42

Well. I can't say I'm massively impressed. It's basically a shade darker and it has barely touched my greys Confused

TwiceMagic · 13/12/2018 14:46

I use olia 3.0 (soft black, which is actually very dark brown). The 4.0 (dark brown) is too reddish for my liking. It’s exactly the same colour as my hair so I only notice it needs redoing when I start to notice the grey bits.

TwiceMagic · 13/12/2018 14:47

I found the casting ones didn’t really touch my greys. The olia definitely does.
