USA shops and sizes

I'm going to be in America in a couple of weeks and won't have time to go shopping, but would like to order some clothes and shies online for delivery. What shops should I be looking at? In the UK I tend to buy from department stores, fat face, monsoon, h&m.

Also, I can't figure out sizing. I'm a uk12, and shoes uk6. Different websites are giving me different conversions! Any ideas?

I'd take your measurements and use those to work out sizing. It's a great idea to get delivery to your hotel, I've done it before for brands not available in the uk but but not clothes. Watching with interest as I'm over in feb and not sure what the best stores are at the mo!

I'm American, and I occasionally buy clothes in the UK. Most charts indicate that you would be a size 8 in clothing, but with all the vanity sizing we have going on right now, you might be a 6. I agree with the suggestion of taking your measurements and looking at the size charts on the various sites.

I usually knock 4 off the UK size when I've shopped in the US, so a UK 14 would be a US 10. Shoe sizes, however, are a mystery to me!

Unless you have a US based credit card with a US address, you won’t be able to order online. Many sites also only accept US based PayPal which again needs a us based card. Also, be aware some companies refuse to ship to hotels because packages go missing too often.

Knock 4 off, so a UK 12 would be a US 8. American clothes are more true to size, so be warned. Your feet will be a US 8

Clothes aren’t cheap over here and but you do get excellent sales. I don’t think high street stuff is nearly as well cut or good quality in the US as in the UK

Some online stores will only take US credit cards, some allow ones from overseas and some you will have trouble getting stuff delivered to anywhere but your billing address, it varies a lot.

If you haven’t got time to shop when you’re there, have you got time to arrange returns if you don’t like what you’ve ordered or they’re not the right fit?

Yes. I always knock off 4 as well so 12 to an 8, 10 to a 6 etc. We have vanity sizing here as well so can’t see it would make that much difference. Isn’t it 2 less with shoes ie 7 to a 5? But not as sure on that.

Somewhere like Nordstrom or Nordstrom’s rack (outlet) is a department store so lots of choices of different brands, but it can be pricey.

What sort of things are you looking for as that will influence where else we might recommend?

With the exchange rate, there may be fewer bargains (although you may be able to get sale discounts - presume you're there over Xmas?).

In terms of stores, it completely depends on what you're after and your style. Shoes I like Sam Edelman, consistently comfortable. Also I tend to buy trainers, but usually in outlets.

Clothes, I usually check out Old Navy for the kids (and PJs for me), J Crew, Nordstrom Rack for jeans. You'd do well to try on American brands in the UK so you know what suits and fits and then order from US. Also Victoria's Secret (although I'm not sure there's much in it now they're here).

My best bargains tend to be from outlets though.
