Box hair dyes

I've got naturally mousy brown hair which I hate. I can't afford to get it coloured at a salon, I used to have full head foils to go blonde. The blonde has almost grown out now and generally my hair looks awful. I want to colour it for the Xmas period but if I start going to the hairdresser again ill have to keep going and can't afford it.

Are box dyes any good these days? I've never done it before but do have someone who would help me. Do i have any other options?

I use one regularly, usually Nice N Easy. I have light brown hair and choose a medium blonde cool shade (otherwise it comes out quite gingery). It looks dark blonde on me.

I use the full box about 3-4 times a year and use the root cover dye in medium blonde in between. Lots of people have commented it looks nice and my friend thought I'd had highlights because it doesn't come out blocky. I haven't had any trouble with it making my hair dry, but my hair is naturally oily.

I used to pay for salon highlights and can honestly say on me the box dye looks as good, if not better.

I get quite a lot of compliments on my hair colour. I use garnier nutrisse. Gave up salon colour about 12 years ago.

Another vote for Nice & Easy. I've been using it for years and it's consistently good.

Agree with PP, it's not a block colour, and I get asked a lot where I've had mine done.
