Red lipstick inspiration

I've fallen in love with Lisa Eldridge's Velvet Ribbon lipstick but don't have the budget (with postage it pushes it to over £30 Shock and it's now out of stock.

So, can anyone recommend similar?

I can't wear Ruby Woo as my lips get very dry. I think I've got Mac Brave but it's too dark for every day.

What would you recommend? It needs to be on the blue red rather than an orange red as I've got olive toned skin.

I'm basically after a bright true red that won't dry my lips out.

Ohh I bought one recently... Let me check... It's called Siren in Scarlet, number 965. I can't remember what brand though!

LambChopsMcGee · 30/11/2018 22:14

It's Maybelline.

Wasn't drying. Very comfortable to wear and didn't bleed or anything. A good blue ish red and didn't make my teeth look yellow!

dementedma · 30/11/2018 22:21

DD2 rocks " a red lip". she wears a mac one. I'll try and find out the name of it.

FannyBurney · 30/11/2018 22:59

Revlon make excellent quality lipsticks and if you go to a big shop, Boots or whatever, you get the whole range. They come in a black tube. Try Cherries in the Snow or my favourite, Cherry Blossom for bright blue-based reds.

MabelStark · 01/12/2018 00:38

Mac Russian Red suits lots of people. Nowhere near as dry as Ruby Woo

MissisBoote · 01/12/2018 07:32

Siren in scarlet looks like it could be exactly what I'm looking for.

The Revlon ones look slightly too berry toned on the screen but I'll have a look at them too.

Thank you

I was with a friend who was wearing Ruby Woo yesterday, it is so lasting and really is the loveliest red. I have similar colouring to you and can't do orangey ones.

Have you tried putting vaseline under it and applying with a brush? that seems to make it not quite as drying.

There was a Tom Ford one that Sali Hughes recommended in her insta feed recently but likely to be at least as expensive as Lisa Eldridge!

hoochymama1 · 01/12/2018 08:29

Gosh I love reds too. Bought Lancôme caprice last week, it is creamy on, lasts well and a good strong red. It was £22 from Debenhams. Never bought this make, normally go for Chanel. It has cheered me up and goes with anything. Ruby woo never suited me, I gave mine to DD Grin

I don't want to derail the thread, but how do you get your red to look really red?

Do you really go to town and do lips in foundation, then line, then several coats of lippy? Or some other trick? I have tried various over the years, Mac Ruby Woo being the latest, but they always look dark pink rather than red on me.

(I am very pale. Think of the palest person you know, then go a couple of shades paler. I hope there's a red out there for me somewhere though.)

LunaTheCat · 01/12/2018 09:10

I am usually an expensive lipstick buyer - Bobbi Brown but they don’t have a descent red. Someone recommended Revlons
Fire and Ice and bloody brilliant - lovely red, stays put. Apparently one of the top lipsticks bought (according to this arcticle)

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/12/2018 10:35

Try Clinique’s lip powder.

It has a velvety feel and there’s a great red as well.

colditz · 01/12/2018 10:37

Revlon Matte 900

Really Red

colditz · 01/12/2018 10:39

ArkAtEee, your issue is probably not your paleness, but your actual skin tone.

If you're wearing the 'wrong' red, it will either look too pink or too orange depending on the yellow or blue undertone to your skin.

Mac Ruby Woo looks pinkish on me too, I don't like it. Revlon Matte 900 Really Red is very slightly more orange, but on me it looks true red.

hoochymama1 · 01/12/2018 10:41

I love fire and ice too. Good old revlon. It looks good on everyone and doesn't cost loads.
I don't know. I apply, blot then reapply. Be prepared to maintain it during the day Grin

ArkAtEee · 01/12/2018 20:05

Thanks @colditz will check out the Revlon.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/12/2018 22:01

If you want matte the Laura Mercier velour ones are amazing. Fire is a fabulous orange red, and my absolute favourite, but Dominate is a great bluer red.

MissisBoote · 02/12/2018 15:47

I plumped for the revlon fire and ice. A good bright true red on me.
Just right for my skin tone.

I was going to suggest Fire and Ice too!
