Frumpy + dress for wedding = nightmare

Angeliki159 · 27/11/2018 11:27

Going to a wedding in 2 weeks and having a nightmare trying to get a dress that fits!
I'm 5ft1 and pear shape (big belly, average boobs)
I'm trying to lose weight but I have caught a bug and feel like arse at the moment so while I am eating according to my diet, I am not doing the hour of exercise a day I was doing.

Time is running out!
I found a beautiful dress online but it's bodycon and I'm not sure I can pull it off. Plus you have to pay for returns.

Anyone know what style of dress works well for a short stumpy pear?
Or any shops that have a good selection of dresses that are NOT covered in blooming sequins and glitter??
Don't want to look like a giant disco ball.

Help!!

What size are you? What colours suit you?

Angeliki159 · 27/11/2018 13:04

I'm 5ft 1, 12/14
I like bottle green, berry colours, black.
I have attached a pic of the one I found online that I liked

OP I have a big belly and I wouldn't wear a body con but that's personal preference. I prefer the 50s prom dress shape, but it has to have a low neckline not a high one!

I got a dress from Jolie Moi for a wedding I went to this summer. They have loads for £25 reduced in the sale at the moment -

I got this one but in a different colour -

I also love this one, the crossover detailing on the boobs are cute!

I agree with the poster above. A dress like the one you posted is only going to accentuate your tummy. You'll look better with a fit and flare shape dress

Rememory · 28/11/2018 16:55

I just bought something in bravissimo. I've linked but it's black so not suitable for a wedding, it looks much better on. They do curvy, really curvy etc and I think accents my good bits and ignores my bad bits(tummy).

WildFlower2018 · 28/11/2018 17:22

Ooh @Rememory I like that a lot x

mirren3 · 28/11/2018 17:38

@WildFlower2018 I looked at the dress in your first link, then got lost in the site and bought a dress for a wedding. I then scrolled down and it's the bottom teal one you linked to. Thanks 💐

peachypetite · 28/11/2018 17:40

Bodycon is going to look all wrong. Go for a fit and flare or a line that will skim over your stomach instead of accentuating it. If you have big boobs then avoid high neck too.

FiftySense · 28/11/2018 17:58

That Bravissimo dress is beautiful.

WildFlower2018 · 28/11/2018 18:49

You're welcome @mirren3 they sell the brand in John Lewis too (for full price) so I figured they'd be good quality. I was very pleased with mine when it arrived, especially for the price. Xx

Chuckles...see I'm terrible at all things fashion!

I bought a plum coloured lacey shift type dress with a v neck and short sleeves but now I don't like it. So that's going back. Makes me look top heavy.

I LOVE the 50s style dresses like the teal one but I worry that being short I would look like a toilet roll cover doll!

I lost all my confidence when I had my baby 4 months ago so I don't think I would be brave enough to wear a bright colour.
I would wear something with a dark base and a brighter pattern.

I think what I liked about the green and black dress is the fact that it's dark but not all black.
I liked the high neck because I will have my hair up (post pregnancy hair fall out issues. Hide it in a bun)

Just trying to think of other brands for you to try/search.

What about chichi London?

Lots of fit and flare shapes if you wanna go that route, lots of dark and berry colours and they do petit so you'll find something that won't swamp you. Plus an assortment of necklines, sleeve options.

Also a good sale on currently 😁

They're another fav of mine 😎

What about this style?
Would that be ok?
I have ordered both to try on.
Thought the ruffle would take the focus from my belly.
The second one won't be worn with a petticoat so won't be as poofy
Love the pattern

I really like those Angeliki, especially the first one but both gorgeous.

Orablu Shock Up tights are the dogs bollocks of pull in pull up tights. I can only find them online and go up a size in them (I'm small in tights usually and get medium in these) They're a million times better than any others I've tried and they don't cause that weird bloating thing like other pull in tights seem to. Anyway, If you wanted something like that for under the fitted dress, try those.

EnidButton · 29/11/2018 18:53

Not an ad I promise. Grin

Angeliki159 · 29/11/2018 19:30

Good shout. I'll have a look.

Would the print on the dress be ok for a wedding?

Pattern and colour is perfect for a Winter wedding imo.

retainertrainer · 30/11/2018 06:47

Have a look on the pretty kitty website . I’ve recently bought a gorgeous velvet dress from there, just needs taking up a few inches (I’m a short arse).

MrsPMT · 30/11/2018 13:00

Can you get to somewhere like John Lewis, Monsoon or Debenhams? Basically somewhere that has loads of dresses. Try on every dress in your size and price range, whether you like how it looks on the hanger or not.

This was my method last time and worked perfect, got a dress I never would have picked out usually but was very flattering.

WildCherryBlossom · 30/11/2018 22:09

If you can get to a department store how about trying their personal shopping? A friend of mine is a fashion stylists and works in a well known department store. Her services are free to the customer and she doesn't work for commission. She says the vast majority of people she helps are looking for a wedding outfit.

WildCherryBlossom · 30/11/2018 22:10

I like the dresses you have ordered by the way!

Notanotheruser111 · 01/12/2018 01:23

I just got that tea dress in the butterfly pattern and I am also pear with a belly. It fits really nicely

Angeliki159 · 02/12/2018 05:19

Dresses arrived yesterday
They are both really nice. The longer one with the ruffle is a bit big :(
The other one fits butim a bit conscious that I look like a cupcake (pleated skirt looks a bit like a cake case) but....IT HAS POCKETS!!!!!

taking both to my mum today to see if she can "fix" either of them.
