All I want is a black shift dress! FFS!

They seem to have vanished off the face of the earth! WTF?!

I have a Xmas party on the 15th. I have a terrible figure. Sad Barbara Windsor boobs, a treetrunk for a waist from front view, and a podge tum from the side.

I also have the longest waist in the history of the world. Anything (and I mean anything) with a seamed waist hits too high. Basically picture a visibly pregnant Kate Middleton and that's what I look like all the time.

I've tried on 10 dresses and all make me look like a sack of spuds. Wrap dresses, skater dresses, prom dresses, tuxedo dresses. My waist is wrong is everything. Wrong length, wrong shape.

Basically the only type of dress I look OK in is one with no waist at all I. E. A shift dress.

They've disappeared! Sad

Has anyone seen a plain black shift dress that doesn't look too corporate or too like a t-shirt? (Lots of things called "t-shirt dresses" around instead but they're just t-shirt!)

Help me S&B Board, you're my only hope....Flowers

i see what you mean OP! they all seem to have vanished off the face of the earth Shock would one like this work?

Bagsonthebrain · 20/11/2018 18:29

It's similar but actually I would call that a swing dress, or a trapeze dress. Lots of fabric there. Would probably look a bit maternity on me, sadly.

Have you tried wallis?

imsorryiasked · 20/11/2018 18:40

How about M&Co ?
They have a few if you scroll down but I really like this one or this one

VanGoghsDog · 20/11/2018 18:59

Yeah, Wallis, I've just got a floaty black shift dress from there that looks fab on me.

They had loads and this was only about thirty quid.

Bagsonthebrain · 20/11/2018 19:03

peachy that link is bringing me to the homepage. Possibly cos I'm in Ireland.

I was in Wallis the other day but didn't see much. I could go back though.

imsorry the 2nd one is beautiful, but it's described as "figure hugging". Eeeek! Shame as it gorgeous and a great price. Wouldn't be mad on the baroque design of the first.

Watching with interest OP, my waist seems to be in he strangest place but its only happened over the last couple of years.

Im busty too is that the problem, all waisted dresses sit just under my bust?

Im no bustier though than before so whats changed, or is everyone else thinking the same 😒

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/11/2018 19:11

Try Phase Eight. I bought a gorgeous shift dress there last winter which looks fab with everything.

MoltonSilver · 20/11/2018 19:13

I have the same long waist. Sometimes it helps to shop from a tall range and have the hem taken up.

MoltonSilver · 20/11/2018 19:22

Lace

MoltonSilver · 20/11/2018 19:25

Sequins

MamaVV · 20/11/2018 19:27

Try looking for ‘tee dress’ or another suggestion ‘crepe dress’. Crepe is often cut in shift dress style (although I’m no designer!)
Summing like this...www.johnlewis.com/whistles-paige-v-neck-crepe-dress-black/p3373438?sku=237145984&s_kwcid=2dx92700036548346395&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjr3ltdnj3gIVi813Ch2HVQSgEAQYCyABEgLRyfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Bagsonthebrain · 20/11/2018 19:32

Out of my size, sadly. Though I was a bit dubious about Whistles as a lot of feedback on here has been that the quality has gone down? I've never bought from there so I don't know if that's true. I do like that dress though and I'm sure it's in stock elsewhere. I'd just have to find somewhere with free returns......

I have been looking at Tall ranges actually. I'm 5'7 so don't even have to get them taken up usually but haven't found anything like what I'm looking for.

That sequin one is very nice. Perhaps too much arm coverage for a Xmas party so worry it would stray into daywear (weirdly my arms and legs are fairly unobjectionable so don't mind getting them out)

JD Williams has loads...
Sequins overload... www.jdwilliams.co.uk/shop/black-sequin-shift-dress/gl169/product/details/show.action?pdBoUid=8010#colour:Black,size:

Oooh I think we may have a winner!!!

VanGoghsDog · 20/11/2018 23:23

This is the one I bought, I was surprised how good it looked on me. I'd ordered a load of stuff from Coast and Phase Eight, no idea why I tried Wallis, don't think I've ever shopped there before:

m.wallis.co.uk/en/wluk/product/clothing-265973/black-sparkle-shift-dress-8060501

I'm a size 14, fat tummy, 5'7".

Bagsonthebrain · 21/11/2018 12:37

Oh that's beautiful. Debenhams wouldn't let me order the Phase Eight one last night, too much traffic on the site I think, so may just be easier (and cheaper!) to go into Wallis tomorrow!
