Last Christmas I bought my make-up loving student niece a Benefit make-up set which was really well received. This year, I'd like to get her something similar but have been trying to buy only cruelty-free this year so does anyone have any suggestions on brands that might be just as popular to a cash-strapped 20 year-old?

Essence, Barry M, or for something a bit more special Jane Iredale, Charlotte Tilbury, Kat Von D.

This is a really good guide: www.crueltyfreekitty.com

Arbonne are 100% Cruelty free and plant based cosmetics. I would say they are on par with Clinique and Benefit for their skin care & make up.

Some make up lines such as MAC claim their products are all natural, however this does include animal rendering (but as animals are natural it sounds okay)

Ere Perez do great lip and cheek tints (like Benetint).

Glow Organic Brighton have a really good site selling ethical beauty.
