I am interested in buying a pair to help with giving my ankle stability after a break.
However when I looked online there were so many of them. When I had a pair years ago there was only one or two types and now there are so many!
Any suggestions? I just want a black pair.

do you mean ones like these?

MikeUniformMike · 07/11/2018 20:52

Avoid Chelsea boots as they are not tight around the ankle.

Skittlesandbeer · 07/11/2018 20:53

Are you asking which are more stylish, or which are best for ankle stability?

tinytemper66 · 07/11/2018 22:01

Yes- I like the look of the one s form the link.

Both?! If I can but really for ankle stability. I have a lovely pair of boots from next -a suede tan but they don't look right with many things but my ankle feels safe in it. I broke the fibula just above the ankle socket to be accurate.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I wear 1460s and while I haven’t broken my leg (this bed tbit might not make sense but I hope it does) they really help keep my ankles steady and strong when I walk up our really pebbly beach that has big hilly bits, to the point wear I wish they were appropriate for high summer wear!

This piece of info might not be of any use but that’s the time when I really notice the difference in wearing them vs not.

They also help me walk properly at work now I have stupid bursitis. Although my heel does ache a bit at the end of the evening at least I can walk in the day.

tinytemper66 · 07/11/2018 22:12

I am a teacher and will probably wear them under trousers for work so need something to last all day as it were.
I usually wear heels and as I haven't gone back to work yet I am having a dizzy spell just looking at them! 😂
Will give them a look too.
Thanks for taking the time to reply 😊

Break them in before you start work. (Although actually my most recent pair were good to go from the first day, my first pair needed a few wears to get going).

They are seriously workhorse footwear though, I looked at mine today and they still look as good as new despite being worn loads. Even the soles look unmarked.

I've had a vegan pair sitting in the hallway for almost a week, while I dithered about returning them. I last wore DMs in sixth form nearly 30 years ago and was worried I'd look a bit of a tool in them now.

VisitorsEntrance · 07/11/2018 23:37

I can’t believe how the price has gone up.
They were never cheap but back when I was a student and you bought them in Millets they weren’t expensive.

JakeBallardswife · 07/11/2018 23:44

I’ve bought a red pair of Newton’s, I’m wearing them in slowly but love them!

TheRoadLessRocky · 09/11/2018 12:58

Don't ge suedey type ones. The leather is lovely and soft and comfortable but won't support your ankle so well. I've got loads of pairs and the most supportive ones are the 1460 type - any made of that material will be best.

Get some decent socks too, I like the Doc Martens socks. Alternatively I will double up on normal socks if wearing new boots or wearing sturdy ones for a long time.

TheRoadLessRocky · 09/11/2018 13:01

Sorry, just remembered, some of the 1460 styles have soft leather too - I meant get some that are more like the traditional type. Though I think the vegan ones are quite supportive too. Just avoid soft leather and suede!

GreenEggsHamandChips · 09/11/2018 13:03

Any of the boots that have a lace. Ideally just a lace but lace and zip are also ok. (I can get away with zips, DD needs lace)

If you are looking for workhorse shoes that are actually quite a bit cheaper, look at kickers Hi-tops. They are fab for ankle stability and a little easier if your ankle fatigues because they are lighter.

Thanks so much x
Will have a perusal and see what I can order!

I recently got 1460's in a very dark cherry red. They are lovely and very comfortable from day one. They also go with everything - black/navy. I am also a teacher and have worn them under my black skinnies. I had compliments. I haven't worn them tucked in or rolled up to school as I feel that is just a bit much school but fine for that look at the weekend or my days off.
