Is there such a thing as an edgy waterproof coat

I'm looking for something properly waterproof with taped seams, not a boring colour, not North Face or didriksons or anything from GO Outdoors. Rains jackets look ok but I think they could be sweaty and I'm not sure how I feel about that rubberised material. Budget of £200. If you can help me I will give you a big fat snog.

Have you tried Seasalt? They seem to be a MN favourite although I don't have one myself. im looking for one smart enough for work

I've heard very good things about sea salt!

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/11/2018 17:14

I have a couple of Rains jackets from their collaboration with Net-a-Porter and I get tons of compliments when wearing them. I don't find them sweaty and the glossy coat look is very "in" this season (except usually for the £800 mark). But I just really like them. I am however prepared for my (charming as ever) father asking me if I'm wearing a bin bag if he ever seems me wearing the black glossy trenchcoat. "Yes Dad I am, a very expensive bin bag" (then carry on doing whatever I was doing regardless).

I guess you could also look at Ilse Jacobsen but she doesn't seem to do much in the way of non-boring colours.

babbscrabbs · 06/11/2018 17:28

Thanks the seasalt range isn't quite what I'm looking for, they're too much like my current coat. How do you find the rains coat in heavy rain Hundred ?

No problems with any of the coats in rain, they've kept me nice and dry.

I have this jacket that I tend to use as a casual jacket at weekends or over my gym kit when heading to and from the gym (and raining). I didn't like it when they first released it but it grew on me and it gets tons of compliments here in east London hipsterland:

I have this one that I use for work (this is the one my Dad will call a bin bag):

And I recently got this one because I just love the colour:

Joules do nice raincoats.

ToftheB · 06/11/2018 17:54

Those Rains coats don’t have hoods! What do you do about keeping your head dry?

ToftheB · 06/11/2018 18:00

(I’ve just bought this - warm, dry and deeply unfashionable! Lovely to wear though www.alpinetrek.co.uk/paramo-womens-torres-activo-jacket-synthetic-jacket/)

Buy one of the Rains coats that DOES have a hood such as: Wink
www.net-a-porter.com/gb/en/product/1089856/Rains/hooded-glossed-pu-raincoat

Most of their coats have hoods actually. Personally I'm not a hood fan (I prefer a hat or umbrella) as they always seem to annoy me.

ToftheB · 06/11/2018 18:30

Ah, much better Grin - I’m a hood fan, I look very stupid in a hat and I’m a menace with an umbrella.

MoltonSilver · 06/11/2018 18:31

Try Ilse Jacobsen

TheClitterati · 06/11/2018 18:32

Look at Uniqlo

babbscrabbs · 06/11/2018 18:35

Anyone got a Stutterheim coat? They looked quite cool

OP posts:
nzeire · 06/11/2018 18:35

I have 2 rains coats, not shiny, to or for me!

I LOVE them. Grey matte one is gorgeous and I got an alpine one for our last winter in Ireland and seriously the best investment ever. Warm, waterproof, hood, not ugly!

smeerf · 06/11/2018 18:37

This is what you want. Not in my budget unfortunately!

Becstarlenski · 06/11/2018 18:45

I’ve got a commuter from protected species, the quality is great it’s also a serious waterproof jacket, not cheap but hopefully it will last as long as my old north face one !

DomesticAnarchist · 06/11/2018 18:52

Finnisterre fit into the edgy but functional bracket. Very highly regarded eco conscious coastal circles.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 06/11/2018 19:02

Stutterheim are nice, as are Elka but they’re often unlined which I don’t love. I think Rains are probably the nicest, albeit expensive. Otherwise Arket have a nice range - you’d need to check their waterproof credentials though.

borntobequiet · 06/11/2018 19:04

No.

malovitt · 06/11/2018 19:10

I've just ordered a Protected Species parka - exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks to the person who recommended them.

babbscrabbs · 06/11/2018 19:31

I saw the protected species ones when they did that great Mumsnet offer, and thought they looked quite good - but I think the colours are pretty dull tbh.

Will check out Elka.

Thanks

Didn't know Finisterre did waterproofs. I like the cut of their jib so will check it out, thanks!

OP posts:
DomesticAnarchist · 06/11/2018 20:14

Finisterre tip: look at their knitwear first. It makes their jackets look cheap!

babbscrabbs · 06/11/2018 21:04

Found a Rains coat I really like but it's £375 Confused

That's more than I've ever spent on an item of anything. Even my sofa. Even my wedding dress!

OP posts:
TheChineseChicken · 06/11/2018 21:14

Oh my goodness, the protected species coats! Seriously trying to justify spending £225 on a raincoat now

Amaaboutthis · 06/11/2018 21:36

Some lovely coats listed here. I’m not sure that sea salt could ever be called edgy
