Under eye corrector/comcealer making my eyes look smaller?!?

I think i found my holy grail - product for under eye shadow / discoloration. A lady at the Bobbie Brown counter in Selfridges gave me a going over, and I bought all the products she used, including the brush. Needless to say it cost ££££ but worth it to me. I was so happy with the lack of under eye shadow that I didn't really clock anything else, although I sort of felt my eyes looked a bit different somehow.

Next morning, I sat down to apply my new products myself. I decided to do just one eye, and ask my daughter (age 20) which eye looked better. Looking in the mirror, it hit me that the eye with the corrector/concealer looked SMALLER. My daughter confirmed this, although she also confirmed the lack of under eye shadow.

Can anyone suggest why this would be so? Some kind of optical illusion? On balance, the shadows bother me so much that I'd rather they were covered and my eyes appeared slightly smaller - I have quite large eyes anyway - but it is rather perplexing. Can anyone suggest why/how, and what I might do to counteract this effect? A bit of a weird thing I know!

Think the shadows maybe balances your eyes. Try to not apply concealer all the way to the lash line, just lightly on shadows and then apply a matte brown eyeshadow along lash line.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, she did apply it right up to the lash line and I copied that when I did it. Do you mean a matt brown eye shadow along the lower lash line?

I would try to just dab on concealer where you need it and blend well and then yes, use a shadow to line under the lower lashline.
Not a sharp line like eyeliner, but soft and blurred using a brush. Does that make sense? Will take a pic of mine!
I am not an expert btw! It's worth a try though as it works for me.

Sort of like that, but you might not want as dark!

Thank you so much! I'm going to raid Dd's makeup supplies and see if I can copy what you've done. You have incredibly pretty eyes by the way!!

Aw, thank you! It's amazing what makeup can do!
I am so fair I look like a ghost without makeup. Being in my 40s tons of slap is not as forgiving though, so am constantly experimenting.
