A small example of the nonsense of clothes sizes

Recently got two pairs of trousers in a charity shop. Very similar style, fabric etc. Both fit well 😊
One is modern, size 12. The other I reckon 20 years old and a 14.

I wish we could just have measurements instead.

Was expecting something (anything!) more dramatic than that.

Same here bombardier.

TU clothing, I'm a size 14 in knickers (and sometimes they can be a bit loose depending on style) size 14 tops, size 16 skirts, nighties I go up to size 18 because I like mine longer.

This has been the case for years back in the early 80s I was a size 12 in most clothes but a 14 in C&A. I bought a lovely original 1950s skirt in a size 14 and could only just get it done up. By the time I got married 6 or so years later I had put on loads of weight but still fitted a 14.

I wonder why we cannot get actual measurements in cm / inch alongside those varying clothes' sizes or even instead of.

When the labels says waist x cm, hips y cm, length z cm, everybody can see if and how the piece will fit, without having to waste time trying on 10 pairs of trousers to find one that fits.

Yeah clothing sizing is crazy - I have clothes from ranging from a size 10 to a size 22 and ALL of them fit. I define myself as a size 14 as that's my size in most clothing but definitely not all.

Vanity sizing is definitely a thing but so too is just crazily erratic sizing.

I was always a 12 as a teen in the 80's at 81/2ish stone ... am now nearer to 10 stone and 47 and in some shops I am an 8! Am I bollocks - not an 80's 8 anyway. It does make internet shopping a pain.

Ceilingrose · 04/11/2018 23:31

I'm the same. I think that if your figure veers in any way towards hour glass it's inevitable.

I have a pair of trousers from the late eighties, size 10. They don’t fit me any more! My daughter is very slim, about size 6, and they are much too small for her.

MadamBatty · 05/11/2018 05:25

My mother has a suit from 60 years ago, 12 skirt, 10 jacket. In today’s sizes I’d say it’s a 6 & 4.
