Curling wand/tong advice

Dd 11 wants some curlers for Xmas I'm confused about the difference between tongs and a wand can anyone explain it to me and which would be better?

Tongs are safer, I've burned my fingers on my wand too many times. The tongs have the clip at the side that hold the hair but you need to wrap the hair around a wand with your fingers.

I can't use tongs to save my life but use my wand all the time on my and DD's hair. I just wrap it round, hold for maybe 10 seconds and drop.
