Coloured tights

What do people think generally of tights in colours other than black? I like a coloured tight myself and have them in dark red, dark green, charcoal grey, purple, navy... I wear them particularly with shoes that aren't black, as I don't like black tights with, say, brown boots. But a colleague remarked to me the other day that they look a bit like fancy-dress, so now I'm wondering if they're too childish for a nearly middle-aged woman to be wearing! Anyone else experienced this?

I'll join you at the fancy dress party then. I'm 46 and particularly fond off my purple tights, which I wear with black killer heels and a patterned dress.
I also have various patterned tights, which I wear with short skirts.
And I have long hair.
Shoot me now! Grin

I love coloured tights and am in my 70's ! Sometimes wear a scarf in the same colour. e.g. black dress, charcoal, purple ,burgundy or dark green tights and match a scarf up with it. Sounds like your colleague envies your dress sense.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 01/11/2018 14:32

I love them, especially in winter and if I'm wearing eg a black dress with some dark boots, they break it up a bit, stop my outfit looking too funereal.

KatyMac · 01/11/2018 14:35

Where do you find them - tesco hardly have any colours

I wanted teal but fancy red and dark green now!

Huntlybyelection · 01/11/2018 14:35

Love them. I'm struggling to find nice thick coloured tights though. I had some turquoise ones and some red ones but they were old and wore out.

bingohandjob · 01/11/2018 14:38

Love them especially in deepest, darkest winter. I've been eyeing up the mustard yellow ones here www.whitestuff.com/accessories-and-shoes/womens-accessories/tights/?gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5PbKvrWz3gIVorDtCh375wLBEAAYASAAEgLkafD_BwE can anyone comment on sizing and quality if they've tried them?

GraceMarks · 01/11/2018 14:40

@KatyMac I got my most recent lot at Asda. They come in a pack of three and you get purple, wine red and black. They also have some grey cable knit ones in at the moment. M&S have them in a few colours, as do John Lewis. I think Debenhams probably have them too but I haven't looked in there recently.

Glad I'm not the only eccentric purple tights lady around!

They're awful (sorry). Only suitable for fancy dress or a child.

VioletWillow · 01/11/2018 15:17

I like coloured tights- and am heartily amused by the idea that they are only suitable for a child or fancy dress! I tend to wear autumnal colours mainly, navy, oxblood, mustard, dark green - I do however have a pair of purple tartan ones that fell in the basket recently! I wear a lot of black in the winter so it definitely lifts it a bit.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 01/11/2018 15:32

Not my thing at all- I'd look like a fat minstrel.

I'd be interested to see how people style them to avoid looking like one of the Merry Men.

KeysHairbandNotepad · 01/11/2018 15:37

I love them. I have rather a lot of black dresses and they work really well with them. Tights tights tights has a brilliant selection , they have opaques that come in about 15 colours.

GraceMarks · 01/11/2018 15:40

@PennyMordauntsLadyBrain Grin Grin

I avoid the fat minstrel look by avoiding stripey tights worn with pantaloons, and only carrying my lute if it's a jeans day.

I think the Merry Men thing can be an issue if you wear dark green tights with ankle boots but otherwise surely there's nothing especially medieval about a nice dress and some burgundy tights?

Grass is greener could you elaborate on why you think they’re awful?
I think they work particularly well on slim legs, fwiw.

Baroness that all sounds great. I won’t be shooting you😉

CraicMammy · 01/11/2018 15:44

I’ve had White Stuff thick tights in the past, but they bobble, especially when worn with leather boots, that really annoys me when they expect me to pay £15 a pop.

I’ve just bought some from snag, in purple, blue and grey. I’ll report back when I’ve tried them out

Oblomov18 · 01/11/2018 15:45

Most of them I don't like - the red ones and green ones I don't like. Just because the actual colour is a bit grim.

Maybe a dark purple would be nice?

ChairinSage · 01/11/2018 15:54

I love coloured tights. I'm 42 and I they can't be that bad as my teenage DDs are happy to be seen with me in public when I'm wearing them, even if it's with a short denim skirt and DMs. My favourites are from H&M as they are soft and wash well, least favourites were from Next - lovely shade of wine but the elastic is rubbish. They rolled down after their second outing and I had to do an emergency dash to Marks for a replacement as i had a seriously saggy crotch.

SuperstarDJ · 01/11/2018 16:13

I’m not a fan, other than on young children. I’ve seen an adult look nice in them on one occasion - Navy knitted dress, navy tights and tan brown brogues with a skinny tan brown waist belt. Was all very understated and looked much better than black tights would have done.

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 01/11/2018 16:14

Yes I like them too - I have grey, purple, navy blue, dark brown and dark green. To be honest the green are the hardest to wear but the grey and purple are great. Actually also have brown as you can't wear black tights with a brown dress imo. Obviously I do have plenty of back and 'nude' too. Most of these are muted - not tried bright red.

Thesearmsofmine · 01/11/2018 16:15

My mum wears coloured tights or patterned tights and she is in her late 60’s, she has great legs and they look fab.

MaisyPops · 01/11/2018 16:17

I dont like them beyond brown, black and navy, personally but personal taste is just that, personal.
It's a bit unusual and rude for someone to pass a comment on your outfit

GraceMarks · 01/11/2018 16:22

@MaisyPops I wouldn't tell someone I didn't like their outfit unless they hadn't bought it yet and they were directly asking me what I thought before they spent their money. But I'm old-fashioned like that...

OP posts:
LemonBreeland · 01/11/2018 16:26

I'm surprised to find so many think them childish. Winter outfits can look so drab, and the colours you are describing are hardly super bright and wacky, they are all muted tones. I'm wearing fairly bright teal tights today, and have mustard too. I would love some more brighter colours but a lot of shops aren't doing them the past couple of years.

I also love opaque patterned tights, but again apart from cable knit there aren't many in the shops at the moment.

lenalove · 01/11/2018 16:31

Really not a fan, sorry Confused always look clownish or childish to me!

seekingclarity · 01/11/2018 16:35

I never wear black, so black tights would look wrong. All my tights are coloured.
