Can I wash a scarf to reduce shedding?

Boring question alert.

I've just bought a new blanket scarf to wear this winter (tan and red), but it's shedding all over my nice black wool coat. Can I cautiously machine-wash it to try and reduce/get rid of the shed, or do I just have to lint-roll like a maniac until this passes?

Scarf is synthetic and not terribly expensive, but I do quite like it and don't have many pennies to spend on replacing it right now, and I need to look smart for my imminent return to work.

Sure, if it's synthetic! I'd even tumble dry it on low as well. You'll end up with the lint trap full of fluff I bet.

Thanks, MN knows everything! Good call on tumbling too. I will report back.

Boring update to boring thread, it worked and scarf is now significantly less sheddy!

Thanks @Xiaoxiong.
