A winter coat that is rain proof with a hood?

Wasn't sure if this was the right place to post.

I don't know if I'm looking for the holy grail here, but I need a coat with a hood (that actually stays up, without me using my hand after a slight breeze) as I often need a free hands with my DC.

Also generous on the hips! As that's my main problem area with coats. Any recommendations? Would be greatly appreciated Smile

Have a look at Seasalt, I got the Janelle coat last winter and it’s great. It’s a long coat, but there are other styles which are shorter. Both the hood and top part are fleece lined and the bottom has a quilt lining. It’s not a very heavy coat so I wasn’t sure it would be warm enough but as I usually have a jumper on when out walking I can honestly say I was plenty warm enough
It is fully waterproof, look out for the the Rain collection as they are all waterproof. The hood is detachable and can be tightened so shouldn’t blow off. I went for a size bigger,( pear shaped ) and I didn’t want it pulling on my hips, I don’t think I needed it but I’d rather have a bit more room.
I got mine in mid December, I wasn’t in a massive rush so I kept checking on John Lewis and Seasalt websites, looking for the sales to start, I ordered from JL in the end as it had £45 off.

Ilse Jacobsen coats are fabulous and the hood actually stays up which is a bonus - they're fitted nicely for an hourglass

I also like Seasalt coats and its definitely worth checking for when they go in the sales at John Lewis and Seasalt and my best bargains for Seasalt has been Next Clearance, I got a navy Janelle at the end of last January in Next for half price.

I got my Janelle for a holiday in Iceland and it kept me lovely and warm and dry in the snowy, wet and windy Iceland weather. The hood can be tightened by cords.

I’ve had Didriksons coats for years...wind and waterproof, hoods, removable fake fur trim on the parkas. Brilliant.

I got a Michael kors coat from tk Maxx a few years ago which fits the bill, and has lasted very well. I think I see them in stores most years. This one is lined with a velvety material so is lovely and warm, has a decent hood and has withstood the worst of the weather that we've had since I got it

I have a storm stuff coat for outdoors - heavy rainproof and hid stays put

I got a brilliant coat from Decathlon last week. It has many pockets and nice long arms.

Sea salt and Boden

Thank you for all the replies. I'll take all these suggestions on board! I dread going coat shopping as nothing ever fits properly 😩

Either too tight around the boobs and hips, or if I go up a size it's too big around the shoulders. Nightmare.

Danefae, as recommended to me on mumsnet. So warm and light, best coat I have ever had. They do a-line styles Smile

Website is a bit crap but ordering works fine and returns are easy (though you have to pay for postage to Denmark).

I've just bought a Regatta coat from Go Outdoors, it's lovely and long, fully waterproof and nice and warm, and the hood stays up even in the wind.
They have discounts on the Regatta coats at the moment as well.

I bought the Seasalt Janelle coat following recommendations on MN and I have not regretted it. It is warm, it is light, it is not over bulky, it has a hood and it is water proof.

Have a look at the seamless puffer in uniqlo too

Redact · 01/11/2018 20:48

Protected Species have a winter parka out this year. I've got their summer parkas and they are totally waterproof. Would definitely recommend.

AnarchyKitty · 01/11/2018 20:51

Dublin and Dubarry for me. Equestrian coats are amazing warm and comfortable.

Floisme · 02/11/2018 09:59

I’ve got the Seasalt Janelle too. I can’t say I love it but it does its job well. I like the length best - cannot see the point of waterproof coats that end mid thigh. It’s quite fitted so may be tight on the hips.

I agree with Redact about Protected Species and, If I was buying now, I would look at their winter parka.
