Job interview clothes-help!

Hi,

I’m currently applying for undergraduate placements in mechanical engineering and have managed to get a couple interviews but I’ve absolutely no idea what to wear! I currently live in jeans, hoodies and doc martens/vans and have had no need for smart clothing until now so need new stuff.

I’m 20 and a size 22/24 and need at least two outfits due to interviews being generally a two day process!

Many thanks to anyone that can help Smile

Hi. I’m a civil engineer, so similar industry, still with a tendency towards traditional formality. You won’t go wrong with black work trousers and a blouse/shirt type too. Also add a jacket/blazer type thing.

For formal business meetings, I trace to wear a “posh” jersey dress (my weird proportions do not lend themselves to tailoring) and a blazer and flat boots. Fir less formal office days, maybe chinos abs a long sleeved T. For site - cargo pants and hi vis!

For your assessment centres i’d stick with trousers and flat shoes, because you don’t know how much walking about, factory visits, group work etc might be involved. Also layers, as the hotel type venues these things are held in are usually air conditioned to death or massively overheated!

Good luck, who are you applying to?

Thank you! Grin The male lecturers aren’t overly helpful about this and being the only girl on my course actively applying for placements I’ve got no one to ask! I’ve currently applied for BAE and P&G and though I’m only at the video interview stage, I’ve got a couple of formal “meet future employers” days through the uni so I might as well plan ahead.
