Want to avoid rubbish cashmere this winter

I need a couple of new jumpers, but have been having no luck on the high street. It seems every brand has a range of budget cashmere out, with the quality on par with the price.

I have some very nice cashmere from places like Pringle (bought from the charity shop for cheap), and the quality is worlds apart from high street cashmere. For the price I would rather have a nicer quality lambswool or merino than a lower quality cashmere, but it’s actually getting quite hard to find these alternatives.

Any recommendations? I’m prepared to spend a bit, and want something better than uniqlo type quality

I'm following (got nothing to suggest though)
I really fancy a cashmere jumper for Christmas , I looked at M&S, John Lewis, Uniqlo.

They do feel soft but no idea how they wear and wash.

I had a Tesco one years ago (machine washable) that felted really badly even though I washed it carefully.

I love the Uniqlo merino, very soft but not cashmere soft , (but then I'm not expecting it to. Merino is nice 'everyday' , casmere is luxery)

I bought a lambswool jumper from Uniqlo, not worn it yet , nice and soft. I might just stick with them?

Have you looked at Brora and Pure (maybe check the sales) they seem to be the gold standard.

Ive tried lots and Pringle are definitely the best but SO expensive. M&S are the high street best, they wash and wear really well. I'm not a fan of the shape though, it's a bit boxy on me.

Benetton do gorgeous Merino wool jumpers for about £30. They wash very well.

franke · 27/10/2018 10:30

I share your dilemma potato.

The quality of Uniqlo cashmere has really dropped in the last few years. They seem to have decided to keep the retail price of cashmere knitwear at the same level but in order to do so have cut corners on the quality. Very disappointing.

I've tried buying carefully on eBay, but that can be very hit and miss.

Cahu58 · 27/10/2018 10:31

Just bought a White Company cashmere jumper. Gorgeous but bobbled slightly after wearing for a few hours.

Raydan · 27/10/2018 10:59

Also...if you or anyone you know is going to the US, Bloomingdale's does brilliant own brand cashmere for about $100 a sweater. They lasted me for about four years.

QueenJulian · 27/10/2018 11:17

White Company cashmere can be great, just go for the thicker knits.

Cahu58 · 27/10/2018 11:36

Obviously where I went wrong Queenjulian!

Applepudding2018 · 27/10/2018 16:47

Can I ask if anybody has bought Boden cashmere this year? I was considering buying with a discount code.

bluetissuepaper · 27/10/2018 18:13

@Applepudding2018 I have a Boden cashmere jumper and love it, it's machine washable too. Soft and wears well / I'd buy more

BikeRunSki · 27/10/2018 18:16

Celtic and Company. Excellent quality merino and lambswool. £££ but not Pringle!

QueenJulian · 27/10/2018 18:23

Cahu I bought the one I’m thinking of a couple of years ago but I know they’re doing thinner knits at the moment. I think a bit of bobbling is normal but not on the first wear!

Lucked · 27/10/2018 18:24

The best cashmere jumper I have is from Pure but not the gassato rubbish. It is a boyfriend style jumper so not too short and it is a good thickness and quality. Has also been washed multiple times on wool setting with no problem.

People always rate M&S but the ones I have bought haven’t lasted however they all seem to be Autograph this year and a better length so I am tempted to try again.

motortroll · 27/10/2018 18:25

I got a merino jumper in tk maxx They had quite a lot of "posh" knits so worth a look.

Lucked · 27/10/2018 18:27

I think a bit of bobbling is expected from new cashmere as it is so fluffy, I have an electric bobble remover thing which is great.

Cahu58 · 27/10/2018 18:46

May invest in one of those machines, thank you

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/10/2018 18:58

The last couple I've had from M&S have been poor quality. I won't buy from there again unless very heavily reduced.

Growingboys · 27/10/2018 19:01

Wyse cashmere. Not cheap but so nice.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 27/10/2018 19:07

White Company
Jaeger
Cos

Recently bought from the above and all are lovely quality

FreeButtonBee · 27/10/2018 19:09

J crew in the sale is worth it. Got a lovely crew neck loose fit grey cashmere jumper for £50 recently.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 27/10/2018 19:18

Can't advise on cashmere but like @motortroll I recently picked up a lovely merino sweater in TK Maxx (for under £30). It's lovely, though remains to be seen how it lasts after several washes.

AsleepAllDay · 27/10/2018 19:22

Me too

AsleepAllDay · 27/10/2018 19:23

And can't do M&S, bought their lambswool and even that bobbled

LunaTheCat · 27/10/2018 19:40

Brora is great but wait sales and buy then - they do great sales

teta · 27/10/2018 19:45

All cashmere bobbles eventually. The worse for me has been Boden and Wrap. Pure collection is not brilliant either. The best I’ve found is Scott & Scott. I bought several items last year from Brand Alley. Also Whistles (from 3 years ago) is good quality. I also use a electric bebobbler it’s brilliant!
Tk Maxx Cashmere is mostly really awful this year. I’m sure Clements Ribiero, Max & co, Tahari all make for Tk’s. The extra large ( should be size 18-20) is about a size 14. Compared to last year the sizes have shrunk.I got some fantastic cashmere last year from Duffy ( via Tk Maxx). This year I’ve bought a thick heavy cashmere cardigan from Daddy’s daughters ( via Tk). It’s fantastic quality and has barely bobbled even though I’ve worn it a lot.

mylaptopismylapdog · 27/10/2018 19:48

I have had several Pure cashmere jumpers over the years and they have been good quality and lasted several years. I agree with Luna above Brora sales have yielded some good finds too.
