Hi everyone - longtime lurker here.

I've had an unexpected windfall and for the first time - ever - I find myself without any debt, bills all paid, essentials and some treats paid for. So with DH's blessing and urging, I've decided to spend it on updating my wardrobe.

I'm 36 and very slight - size 6-8, fairly flat chested, slim waist. Work clothes could be smart casual - no jeans but not office wear either. I tend to wear wide-legged trousers and long sleeved t-shirts, button down shirts, polo necks, or dresses, tights and boots. Live in skinny jeans and ill-fitting and tattered jumpers at the weekend.

Budget is 1.5 k and my tastes are more high street than designer, though I perhaps would like to go for a better quality good coat and handbag.

What should be on my list and which shops should I go to?

Oooh fantastic! Cos, Massimo Dutti. What style of coat do you want?

Zara has some great stuff, also mango not too expensive. House of Fraser have a sale on Friday too 20% maybe a nice bag too?

I rushed like I always do & missed that last bit! A bag and coat are always nice definitely get them also a nice pair of shoes so it's a full outfit!

Ooh - how exciting! It depends on what you already have, but I would buy just a few nice things that go together.

  • a cashmere jumper from Uniqlo
  • a coat, trousers and dress from comptoir des cottoniers
  • some nice boots maybe?

These are great suggestions - thanks.

I have no idea about styles of coat. I need something reasonably warm (I live in Scotland) and smart but not office-wear (I work in the creative industries).

I'm making a list

jeans
good coat - perhaps grey or airforce blue, maybe red
good bag - brown, tan or grey, leather, big enough for laptop, not too structured or boxy
ankle boots - tan

I prefer slim fitting to floaty or voluminous clothing - I tend to think that I'm so slight that anything shapeless or baggy makes me look smaller and thinner and like I'm wearing the grown-ups clothes without their permission!

Am considering personal shopper appointments and making a day of it...
