Ideas for Christmas and New Years Day

Currently overseas in the tropics, so own limited formal winter clothing. Need ideas for a formal New Year's Eve dinner at a country house on a remote Scottish island (so not thinking party dress) and a formal Christmas Day lunch with family at home. I'm 8/10 tall, pretty sporty frame - 38.
Anyone spotted anything ?! Ideally a few pieces that can form part of a capsule wardrobe ....... HELP

If you’re not thinking of party dress, what are you thinking of?
Could it be wide leg trousers and a fine knit jumper?

BigFatBloomers · 16/10/2018 08:24

What’s the budget? What colours suit you?

Elledorado · 16/10/2018 08:38

How formal is formal?

lesstonicmoregin · 16/10/2018 08:53

Happy for a dress, just not a party number with lots of sparkles. I wear a lot of neutral tones, but suit brights. Wear a lot of pencil skirts, with shorter tops. Wide trousers do nothing for me, they wear me. But I like the look. Tend to like fitted rather than loose. Open to budget, however appreciate that I might only get one or two wears out of them. I'm blonde, tanned. Always wear a heel.

Formal is not cocktail or black tie. But last time i wore a navy midi laser cut skirt with a fine merino wool to Christmas dinner and felt comfortable.

Any wise words ladies - I wouldn't even know where to start looking as I haven't lived in the uk in 10'years

Would a burgundy leather pencil skirt and a forest green fine knit merino wool top work Op? Maybe with chocolate brown knee high heeled leather boots and a chocolate brown wrap?

EmmaStone · 17/10/2018 09:37

Anything at Reiss work?

I think a leather pencil skirt as above sounds lovely too.

SimplyPut · 17/10/2018 09:49

A few ideas...
Dark blue velvet dress
Forest green dress
Fine knit with a leather pencil skirt
Black midi skirt could be mixed with several tops or fine knits. Suede boots or shoes for Christmas Day to Hogmanay.
Looks nothing on the hanger but very versatile

SimplyPut · 17/10/2018 09:50

@EmmaStone the Rex dress in teal from Reiss is stunning.

EmmaStone · 17/10/2018 12:43

@SimplyPut - gorgeous!

lesstonicmoregin · 17/10/2018 20:28

Thanks ladies ! Definitely going to go leather skirt. Will wear that here too with a cami in winter. Now to find the perfect one ..... any tips. Love Riess, used to wear that back in the day and you can get it in bigger David jones - so will be able to check sizing !
Thinking really fine knit, maybe almost sheer for Hogmanay. And some sort of silk top for Christmas. Now to get hunting !
