Well, the problem with grey hair is that it keeps growing! The colour will last far longer than it takes for your roots to show through, though.

My hair actually grows at different rates at different times of the year, so that affects how often I do a root touch-up. The other thing that makes a difference is how different your hair colour is from the grey. So if you use a black or dark brown hair dye you will see grey roots far more clearly earlier than if you are using a light brown or blonde and will need to retouch more often.

It terms of the overall colour - my colour fades far more in the Summer than the Winter due to sunlight. In the Winter I only retouch roots. In the Summer I do the roots and then pull the colour through the rest of my hair.
