What style dress for my body shape?

I'd like to start wearing dresses but I don't know what style would suit me. I think I'm an apple but I'm not sure. I'm 5' 9", 13 stone. I used to be slim with broad shoulders but I've now got a big tummy. ☹️
I have skinny calves and massive feet. I don't like wearing heels. I don't need to be particularly smart, but I don't want to look scruffy. I hate patterns.
Any suggestions please?

Same here OP!

I find square/boxy t-shirt or jumper dresses suit me as they show off my height and relatively slim arms and legs, yet conceal my spare tyre!

Some shirt dresses suit me as long as they're not gathered at the waist.

I wear them (in the winter) with black tights and ankle boots as they balance my shape well and I find my feet look smaller in boots. If you can bear a slight (very slight!) heel it's even more flattering. Heels on ankle boots aren't too painful as your foot is so well supported.

Can you link to something you've bought recently please Coats? Thanks

I can't right now as I'm in the bath and on my iPhone but I will come back to this thread and post some links, I promise.

I haven't bought these (£££) but they're good examples of the styles I own. Once you know what you're looking for, you can find them at any budget.

John Lewis has a good search filter which can help you narrow down the options. "Tunic/smock style" and "shift dress" possibly "straight" are the filters to use, under "Shape" in the filter options. You can specify sleeve length and neckline too!

You sound similar to me OP
Shirt dresss, wrap dresses, skater dresses and tunics all work best.
Avoid high necks and short sleeves

All the links I'm posting are dark colours as that's what I wear but I'm sure many other colours and patterns are available. I just don't see them Grin

This uniqlo one is £14 and comes in a few colours and has slight batwing sleeves which I find flattering on "our" body shape. Comes in a few colours. I'd size up to make sure it's not too clingy : www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-soft-knitted-fleece-long-sleeve-dress-408772.html

Thanks for those links. I tend to wear plain dark colours too. What about this dress? www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/product/women-lace-sleeveless-dress-410447.html?dwvar_410447_color=COL09&dwvar_410447_size=SMA002&cgid=
I can't wear roll necks as my neck is short and fat.
I'm quite flat chested so won't straight dresses make me look a bit like a bloke in a dress? No offence to blokes who like to wear dresses.
