Talk to me about base coats for nails polish- having issues

1st world problem but...have tried using a base coat when using a darker polish (Essie Angora Sweater which actually looks darker on than in the bottle for some reason..)

I usually wear pale colours so don't want my nails stained by a darker polish.

But anyway- used Rimmel base coat and find the polish takes ages to dry- seems to stay tacky but also is harder to apply- it's as if it 'mixes' somehow with the base coat and doesn'tlook smooth.

Is this 'cos it's cheapo Rimmel or is it base coats per se?

Essie Grow stronger is my fave. I do use a very thin coat and leave it a good half an hour though.

I use this as a base coat and to coat. Doesn't take forever to dry and it gives a lovely shiny "gel" effect smooth topcoat.
