Why doesn't this work?

In my head, this looked ok but the reality is vastly different. Is it just too short for my age, and could I do anything to improve it? I think I'll send it back but I wanted to like it.

You've got a great figure and look loads younger than your age Op. I think you're right though, that outfit doesn't work. I like the pinafore look with t shirt underneath, but you need something chunkier, maybe made from cord, with thicker straps.

I'm genuinely grateful for all your comments and posted the dress back today. As I said in my OP, it felt as if it should have worked but it just proved that I'm living in a time warp .....

@Truckingonandon - you are too kind but opaque tights hide a multitude of sins and seem to have a squashing in effect! Plus do not ladder. Win win 😀

Thank you @Laska5772 - I did see something like that but it's more casual than I had in mind. Although thinking about it, I think DD (20) might have left something very similar in her wardrobe so I could try it on.

Agree the bodice isn't good but I'd stick a boxy cropped jumper on top because the shape of skirt is great on you (I have to admit I'm a year younger than you so also love all the 90s fashion!).
