What do hair rollers do?

Excuse my ignorance,do they actually curl or just add 'omph'?

I have just above shoulder length hair and was considering buying velcro rollers to add wave, but after watching a couple of YouTube tutorials, people just seem to use them to add volume?

I do have heated curling iron but was looking for something I could quickly stick in damp hair and just leave for a few hours/sleep in to add a more groomed look (whether that be volume or waves). Or are velcro/foam curlers a waste of time/ thing is the past?

Any tutorial video links would be amazing.

The only thing I've used that's worked for curls are curlformers. I have lots of thick hair though. Rollers I found make little difference.
Curls via straighteners work the best for me,

It all depends on the size of roller you use as the big ones will just give body and the medium/small ones tend to give more of a curl.

I used to have heated rollers years ago and loved them but then straight hair came in so I binned them .haha

Heated rollers curl my hair. Velcro add oomph and a slight wave. Love my heated rollers. Much quicker and less faff than a curling wand

I use mine a lot .I wash , and dry hair then use my straightener to heat the strands of hair and then put in the roller immediately while the hair is still hot.Repeat with rest of hair and then let it cool down , do make up or whatever but leave them in for a while take out and and I then have head of bouncy curls. My hair is shoulder length.

Thank you everyone. Going to get some velcro rollers to start with as cheaper. Any brands of heated rollers people could recommend?

Schn- do you use the velcro ones? Is it best to get a range of sizes?

I have different sized ones and use the larger ones for my side swept fringe and back of head but also have a travel pack of same size velcro rollers that also work just as well.My hair is naturally wavy with long layers and prone to frizz and this way is the easiest and best way to have really groomed hair for me.

i use velcro rollers if i just want some volume, and heated rollers for curls. if i’m going out i’ll put my rollers in a few hours before and then take them out right before i leave the house. i do find that heated rollers only really work on longer hair though. when i tried them with shorter hair i looked ridiculous. i use the babyliss thermo ceramic rollers - i think they were around £35.
