Leather skirt

I've just bought a black leather skirt, not quite pencil, slight a-line, fits really nicely...

BUT now I'm having a crisis of confidence about what to wear with it!

Anything light coloured and fitted makes me look like an extra from Allo Allo. Printed shirt/blouse make me look like I work behind the bar at the Queen Vic.

So stylish MNers, what should I try?

It's this one:

I have a similar skirt and also struggle. I find it works nicely with a fitted lightweight jumper. I have a Boden cashmere one that looks nice (mine is the "seaweed" colour) But will be watching thread for other ideas.

Following, as I have an identical skirt I got in oasis a few years ago, and I never know what to wear it with!

ShirleyPhallus · 25/09/2018 13:19

That is GORGEOUS

I wear mine with long sleeved crop tops, baggy short jumpers, white chiffony blouse tucked in, vest top and denim jacket over the top

Then tights and boots or converse

It is SUCH a practical investment that you’ll wear loads

ShirleyPhallus · 25/09/2018 13:20

(Should add I don’t wear those all at the same time!)

BitOutOfPractice · 25/09/2018 13:21

I’d say a jumper too. I think you need to dress it down to avoid the Cille look.

It’s a beautiful skirt though op!

Prettysureitsnotok · 25/09/2018 14:55

That is a stunning skirt and will go with anything - it's basically as neutral as blue jeans!!

Smart blouses
Baggy / fitted / cropped jumpers
Rock chick t shirts

mrslebon · 25/09/2018 15:25

Something like this which is slightly cropped and a bit slouchy would work well. I have this jumper by the way and as it's 50% cotton, it's decent enough quality.

I have a grey leather skirt that’s very similar in cut. I wear it all the time, but I agree there’s a sort of mental hurdle to jump over with leather skirts and trousers. Chunky knits look great, so does a blouse tucked in (never thought of Allo Allo though, haha! Maybe avoid with a buttoned up shirt?). For me it’s the shoes that avoid the Queen Vic look. Ankle boots and opaque are definitely the way ahead with everything.

I wear mine so much I am considering this one..

I wear mine with chunky knits all the time. Love it!

Ant007 · 26/09/2018 21:31

I wear mine with a tucked in close fitted crew neck cardigan, leaving a couple of buttons undone. My skirt is slightly longer and more pencil though.
Lovely skirt.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 26/09/2018 21:34

I've got the La Redoute version and I put a slouchy jumper and scarf combo with tights and boots, or tights, Converse and a silly t shirt.

200% a jumper with a leather skirt is so classy. I love mine

Simonutti72 · 26/09/2018 21:41

Have had a wine coloured leather pencil skirt for about 5 yrs & it’s fab. Suede knee high or ankle boots & opaque tights. Jumper on top - fine knit or chunky - nothing too fitted. It’ll last for years.

SapphireSeptember · 26/09/2018 23:17

I have a (faux) leather skirt, I wear it with t-shirts with some sort of design on them (band logos or butterflies seem to be my preferred options,) and pointy toed ankle boots. My skirt is nearly ankle length though so I just wear plain black socks and don't bother with tights.

MoltonSilver · 27/09/2018 06:56

Try a dark denim shirt.

0ccamsRazor · 27/09/2018 09:04

I have a few leather skirts of various lengths and styles, I wear them with fine knit fitted polo neck wool jumpers or chunky wool Arran style jumpers.

Always worn with knee high leather or suede boots.

They are very versatile and last years, a couple of my leather skirts I have had since I was 20, am now 45!

I don't really do relaxed casual, I tend to dress in smart casual, no trainers, converse etc, always leather boots or shoes.

peachypetite · 27/09/2018 09:05

White shirt? V neck jumper?

Charlotte48 · 30/09/2018 18:40

I agree with other posters, I think you should "dress down" leather skirts and wear with plain chunky knits, plain polo necks or jumpers, I don't think they look so good with satin or silky blouses - then a nice jacket with a a thread or pattern looks nice too. The one you have would look good with boots too.

Judydreamsofhorses · 30/09/2018 18:49

I have two leather skirts, and wear them with jumpers, 100 denier opaques, and either black Stan Smiths, brogues, or flat Chelsea boots. I wear them loads at this time of year, love them.

DavetheCat2001 · 30/09/2018 19:34

I've been eyeing up this Boden one:

TheWombat · 02/10/2018 08:57

I’m investing in this one: www.reiss.com/p/leather-pencil-skirt-womens-megan-in-black/

It’s really well constructed and hides my tummy whilst emphasising my waist. Genius!

TheWombat · 02/10/2018 08:57

Lol, just realised I like the skirt so much I posted it twice Blush

DavetheCat2001 · 02/10/2018 14:56

That's lovely @TheWombat
