How can I smell nice?

In recent years I've gone off perfume. I find it smells very chemically and doesn't last very well.

I find scented body lotions don't really last on me. Perhaps I just haven't found the right one.

I don't mind body sprays but I find they can smell a bit like my high school changing rooms when everyone was blasting Impulse at their sweaty crevices.

But, I want to smell nice. I want to be one of these women who has a haze of a lovely scent around her.

So, if I don't use perfume or body spray and I haven't found a lasting body lotion, what can I use to smell nice? A friend suggested essential oils but I haven't tried that yet.

Any suggestions from you lovely ladies.

Some body lotions still smell on me the day after. I wear body lotion instead of perfume.

I like strong scents though. Eau Dynamisante body lotion is one of my favourites that is less strong.

Ila body oil. Lasts all day and smells gorgeous.

FishChops · 24/09/2018 10:07

Thank you both but these are really really expensive Shock

You get used to smells and don't notice them anymore. The scents might be lasting better than you think.

Agree about lotions being longer lasting ,still a bit pricey ( IMO ) but I love Nantucket Briar by Crabtree and Evelyn

Put lavender or other essential oils you like in your bath. Don’t need a lot - it makes the bathroom smell lovely and I think it lingers.

LuckyDiamond · 24/09/2018 10:15

Inexpensive body oils I use are

Sanctuary
Fenjal
Avon Skin So Soft

LuckyDiamond · 24/09/2018 10:16

Palmers Cocoa Butter body lotion has a long lasting smell as long as you don’t mind smelling like a chocolate bar Grin

specialsubject · 24/09/2018 10:19

wash yourself and your clothes. A 'haze of scent' can be a ghastly stink to other people. No one should be able to smell anything unless they are in kissing distance.

FishChops · 24/09/2018 10:25

I do wash myself and my clothes @specialsubject Grin

Oh, I forgot about Fenjal. I might have to treat myself to a bottle of that.

No, I don't mind smelling like a chocolate bar at all.

I'm finishing off my old bottles of perfume at the minute then I'm going to invest in some nice stuff (body lotions, oils etc) that will actually smell lovely.

I think part of the problem is that I swim every week day morning so the smell of chlorine can drown out lovely smelling lotions etc. It's not that I smell of chlorine, just that I smell of, well, nothing Sad

I use Eau Ressourcante deo. Very expensive if you think of it as a deodrant but very cheap if you think of it as a perfume. It doesn't smell artificial and it is quite light, but smells good. Same is true of all teh Clarins scents.
Also agree about Fenjal oil - again, expensive for bath oil but cheaper than perfume.
DC always comment when I use Palmers cocoa and coconut hand creams.
A nicely scented shampoo helps too. I like Head & Shoulders apple or the almondy-scented Aveda one.

layering. Whatever the scent, the only way I've found to get that lovely lasting smell is layering. So use both body lotion and perfume in the same range at the same time.

Different range is fine but will of course distort the smell.

turtifrutti · 24/09/2018 10:28

Zaflora

FishChops · 24/09/2018 10:32

@turntifrutti Grin I love Zoflora but not quite ready to start smearing it on my body yet

I used to use a really lovely smelling shampoo that really lasted but now I've got super short hair, shampoo for smelling lovely isn't really an option any more.

Cheap tip!!!! Find a fabric conditioner you really like and put some in a spray bottle with water then spray your clothes lightly with it on the outside whilst you're in the shower/swimming 😊 they'll smell amazing and you can get some quite exotic fragrances now.

FishChops · 24/09/2018 10:48

@Onemansoapopera

I do that to freshen up my carpets Grin That's actually a really good idea because I've got a bit of a weird fetish for nice fabric conditioners Blush

I've been complimented before when only wearing my Palmers Raw Shea body lotion... it's lovely.

Onemansoapopera · 24/09/2018 10:50

Haha yes I do too and the sofa cushions...I got the idea when I accidentally sprayed my teenage dd who was in situ on said sofa 😂 she smelled amazing all day 😁

Truckingonandon · 24/09/2018 10:52

Clinique aromatics body smoother (yellow tube). The perfume is horrid but the lotion is divine, lasts all day and you only need a bit on neck and inside wrists. Go to dept store and try it!

Onemansoapopera · 24/09/2018 10:59

Also whatever you put on your skin, always layer it over oil...it ramps up the fragrance

FishChops · 24/09/2018 11:04

@Onemansoapopera Grin What sort of oil would you use to layer over, please?

OP posts:
Onemansoapopera · 24/09/2018 11:13

If you're just dabbing on wrists etc just a dot of any oil you've got knocking about...even olive oil, coconut oil, whatever...it holds the fragrance and stops it being absorbed too quickly and disappearing into the skin. If you're doing body lotion again a light oil on the body...doesn't matter what it its only there to carry and hold the scent. Having said that mother earth based in Grasmere do beautiful massage oils that you can use on your body...they smell incredible and go a long way. I'll look for a link.

I used these in my salon and people always commented how gorgeous they smell on the skin.
