It’s suddenly freezing and I need layers - please help! Here is your brief:

Sweatshirt or jumper
Warm but not too thick
NO HOODIES (hoods are annoying)
Slightly fitted (not tight but not shapeless)
Machine washable (none of that hand wash only nonsense)
Preferably cotton

Uniqlo knitwear is fab.

Why only cotton though? Won't you be freezing?

doodlejump1980 · 24/09/2018 08:59

Got a couple of lovely waffle jumpers in GAP recently.

AnotherEmma · 24/09/2018 09:01

Thanks both

I like cotton because it’s natural, breathable, machine washable, comfy

The wool jumpers I’ve had always seem to lose their shape and loads of them are hand wash only

I would still get a wool jumper if it was machine washable and I liked it enough to risk the shape issue

I was also going to suggest uniqlo.

AnotherEmma · 24/09/2018 09:03

Having said that I’m wearing a north face hoody today (which must be polyester) because it’s thin and warm. The hood is annoying me already!

Lands end if you don’t mind warmth over fashion. Also Espirit. They have a cotton section.

madeyemoodysmum · 24/09/2018 09:10

Long sleeve thermal tops m&s or one of the ski brands Then jumper of choice over the top. Simple.

One thick layer won't keep you warm.

AnotherEmma · 24/09/2018 09:17

“One thick layer won't keep you warm.”

No shit Sherlock!

That’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking for sweatshirt/jumper recommendations. I will be wearing other clothes too Wink As I said in my OP, I need layers.

That’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking for sweatshirt/jumper recommendations. I will be wearing other clothes too wink As I said in my OP, I need layers.

You then went on to ask for recommendations for ONE item of clothing, a sweatshirt. Your OP was a little confusing, so perhaps lay off the sarcasm and others might be more willing to help.

So, do you already have thinner layers to go under requested sweatshirt, or would you like recommendations for layers too, as also implied in the OP?

For thin layers, I'd head to Uniqlo for their heat tech tops which look like normal tops should you wish to shed layers. Or for more traditional thermal layering, I'd buy thin knit merino from outdoor shops.

For slim fit sweatshirts as a top layer, again Uniqlo, or Gap.

MawkishTwaddle · 24/09/2018 11:14

Try Sugarhill.

MoltonSilver · 24/09/2018 11:27

Not a fan of hush overall but their sweatshirts are really nice. This is lovely and warm.

I feel the same about cotton jumpers and have found some nice ones in Lands End but I don't think they have much at the moment. Cotton is getting so much harder to find.

Mint Velvet do a lot of jumpers that are mostly cotton and are machine washable. I've had good luck with them washing well.

carbuckety · 24/09/2018 12:20

I also only wear cotton and have found that gap sweatshirts are good ( but haven't bought any for ages. They do last and wash well.ive got 2 sweatshirts from hush this year but pricey so they better last. When I do wear jumpers they tend to be cotton or cotton/ linen mix and as a top layer theybare warm enough unless exceptionally cold weather. I go to Boden usually for these. If I ever wear wool then it has to be merino as all others including cashmere make me itchy. Hobbs usually do a good selection and and some I've had for 12 years ( I tend to buy these in classic styles eg roll neck, round neck, no embellishments)

Btw I thought your brief very clear. You want sweatshirts or jumpers now it's cooler.

AnotherEmma · 24/09/2018 12:56

Thanks very much for all the fab recommendations, looking forward to some online shopping later! (I only ever seem to buy clothes for DS 🙄)

Sorry if my OP was slightly unclear, I am definitely looking for sweatshirt/jumper recommendations only. I mean I need more clothes in general but I am tackling the biggest wardrobe gap first Smile

Update: ordered this cotton sweater from Hush. Thank you Molton and carbuckety as I hadn’t come across Hush before 👍

www.bamboo.co.uk have beautifully soft sweatshirts and base layers.

AnotherEmma · 24/09/2018 22:35

I looked at Uniqlo but only found one cotton sweater and it was hand wash only! Shock They had machine washable merino wool but I was confused by the sizing. I ordered from Gap instead as they have machine washable merino wool, plus 40% off full price styles atm Smile Shame they didn’t have any of the jeans I wanted in my size Sad

Sorry for the multiple posts, paragraphs aren’t working on this stupid site! I’m done online shopping for tonight but will look up the other suggestions tomorrow. Thanks again.

Oh and all the Gap sweaters were cotton blend! I couldn’t find any 100% cotton, gah Angry

PS Decided to have a quick look at Esprit... loads of cotton jumpers!!! I’m on the fence about this one. Yay or nay?

Looks a bit like a pyjama top. I love the star one though!

AnotherEmma · 25/09/2018 11:14

You are right! I knew there was something wrong with it Grin

I’ve also remembered that I have a few Esprit tops and sweaters, and I find them all slightly too short in the body. I’m tallish (5’8) and prefer my tops a bit long.

I can highly recommend Oh Yeah sweatshirts from TK Maxx online and also these jumpers from H&M (50% cotton):

AnotherEmma · 25/09/2018 18:27

In other news I wore a knitted jumper today (cotton/acrylic) which is handwash only and managed to get B.B. cream on it almost as soon as I’d put it on...

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 25/09/2018 22:32

Meh. I bung all my woollens including cashmere in the machine. It's all absolutely fine with no bobbling (until I ineveitably put iton a warm wash by mistake with my dark colours or something).
Cold water and the right detergent - or conditioning shampoo.is good too.
