Any recommendations for auburn hair dye?

I want luscious chestnut auburn hair. Not quite bright ginger, but rich gingery brown. Emphasis on the red colour rather than a tinged brown like I normally manage to use instead Sad

If you have lovely auburn hair from a dye packet which do you use?

I have naturally auburn hair which during my youth I alternately bleached or dyed black. When I got a bit older I tried to dye it back to the deep chestnut it used to be - no shop bought dye would do it, they were all obnoxious fake red or pinky ginger . I paid a fortune in a salon and for about two weeks it was glorious movie star red, then it washed out. (Eventually it has grown back and I now appreciate its natural colour) but everyone I spoke to at the time said red is a bitch to keep from washing out, which is why the packet dyes are never the movie star colour. Sorry that's probably not helpful ... I did use a nice and easy once which came out ok for a few weeks before fading to pinky..

I've had good results with e-salon for home dyes

Henna? I used to use the lush henna blocks. Depends on your natural colour, but the Rouge gives a gorgeous fiery red and the Marron is a darker chestnut colour. I used to find that it would fade just enough that my roots wouldn’t be noticeable. Absolutely stinks though, and used to give me a headache because it’s so heavy. I’m tempted to give it another try though because the colour and condition is perfect.

Henna sounds good actually, I'd forgotten about henna. The natural aspect appeals too.
The smell...is it just on application? How long does it stay around for?
