Making a short cut spiky

I've got short hair, my hair is naturally very thick so my hairdresser chops into it so it's not flat. I normally use texturising gum to try and get definition but this time it's not working and I end up with hair that just looks very flat. Any recommendations for products that can lift sections of my hair to give it definition? TIA

Whilst searching for images to show the look I'd like to achieve I think I may have identified the problem - is it only really possible to do this with fine hair??

(and I realise the thread title is slightly misleading saying spiky!)

Vo5 matte putty.

Get sections and twirl them around between your fingers with a little product.
