Style this skirt

I have this skirt which I've had for years and years and which owes me nothing but I'm not sure how to style it to look modern. I think the shape and the brown are very this season so would like to take it out of retirement but what would you wear it with?

A chunky cream sweater. But I think the skirt is old fashioned - sorry

CountFosco · 21/09/2018 20:30

Well it is older than my children Grin. I'm trying to work out if it can be worn this season or not and since the shops are full of brown and midi skirts I think it has more of a chance than a couple of years ago when I lived in grey and minis.

Tucked in roll neck sweater.

With pointy heeled boots.

MoltonSilver · 21/09/2018 21:14

It looks a bit summery. Is it heavier than it looks in the photo?

gower4 · 21/09/2018 21:38

Actually yes, that's the main problem - too summery for this point in the year. I think you might just have pulled it off in the hotter months Smile

It's cotton but a heavy cotton that can hold its shape and it's fully lined.

Skinny rib, brown fishnets, ankle boots?

neveradullmoment99 · 22/09/2018 09:16

A neat and fine cashmere cream or light caramel jumper - crew neck preferably or boat neck or polo and brown boots.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/09/2018 09:21

I find brown akward. I see it is pale green on the print. I thought it was white or cream. In that case i would choose a brown top that matches skirt or slightly lighter/ darker. I had in the past and gave away a fine neck jumper from boden in bitter chocolate. It was nice and neat with a crew neck and 3/4 length sleeves. Something like that?

ChishandFips33 · 22/09/2018 09:22

Fitted polo neck jumper
or chunky fitted jumper to mix up the textures

Long boots to keep it simple and avoid additional colours of shoes/tights

I have similar skirts I'll be wearing through the autumn

Could be worth taking it shopping with you and trying things on with it - be open minded about colours etc

neveradullmoment99 · 22/09/2018 09:25

You could equally pick up the green and wear a shortsh brown cardi. I agree with pp. Long boots, not ankle. Take it shopping with you!

neveradullmoment99 · 22/09/2018 09:27

Sorry pick up the green on print with a little top - no buttons and little brown cardi. Long brown boots and nude tights.

tilligan · 22/09/2018 09:31

More of a summer style, looks too thin for autumn, sorry.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/09/2018 09:37

I think you will get away with it fine in winter. Its more of a winter colour. In summer i would choose a mint green tee( if the colur is mint on the print) and chunky brown wedged sandals

jenthehen · 22/09/2018 09:40

I think a chunky mustard short jumper would look great

ChishandFips33 · 22/09/2018 09:44

Love the mustard idea!

Plum or burgundy might work too - or dark green

neveradullmoment99 · 22/09/2018 09:55

Really like mustard too. I dont suit it sadly so never thought about it but its everwhere and i love it.

Fatted · 22/09/2018 09:59

I'd say cream polo neck or fine knit jumper with boots.

I do think the fabric does make it look a bit dated even though it's this seasons colours

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/09/2018 14:29

Ooh ooh are brown midi skirts back?

CountFosco · 22/09/2018 17:38

Derail away Charlotte. Shops seem full of richer colours than we've had for a while.
And I'm trying to work out if an old favourite has legs - I had a gorgeous cropped burgundy 100% wool teddy jacket from the mid 90s that I couldn't bear to part with but that hadn't looked right for years then last year the shops were full of them and I wore it again and got lots of compliments.

So 'shopped my wardrobe' with the brown skirt (the pattern is mint green) and feet-wise knee high brown boots are far and away the best (very 70s) followed by my Stan Smith (because everything looks better with Stan Smiths Grin). I tried my dark green cropped jumper but it's slightly too boxy to be worn with this skirt I think but colour OK and my other cropped jumpers are better shapes but not so good colourwise. My nude silk blouse that was ruined in the wash (weeps) looks quite good with it and the boots in a very 70s way. So that gives me a bit of a lead.

Love all the colour suggestions, mustard is a fab suggestion but it's not my best colour so I keep it to accessories usually. Adore burgundy and love how it looks with brown so I might try that. Tried it with a few green tops in my wardrobe but none look exactly right with it. But think I'll serious look for a mint green t-shirt to go with it next summer (thought about a Breton last summer but I don't like Bretons on me).

When I originally bought the skirt I wore it with a fitted brown cardigan with 3/4 sleeves and a v-neck and little bow detail at the waist and a little vest top underneath with fishnets and gorgeous brown tweed kitten heels. Very 50s. Want to aim more 70s now!
