Help desperately needed for DD17

My 17 yo DD is a size 14/16 and 5’4”, she lives in jeans, shirts and boots. She NEVER wears a dress or skirt. She scrubs up really well and can look polished when she needs to, taking care with her make up and hair.
She has formal black tie xmas do coming up at school and I am at a complete loss of what she can wear. No way will she wear an evening dress and jumpsuits look ridiculous on her. She said she would wear a jacket and trousers but they make her look really blocky and to be honest not very formal wear, rather she looks like she’s going to the office.
I love her very much but we have started falling up over this and I’m on the verge of giving up. Can anyone offer any suggestions or any retailers that might offer a solution. A jacket that would flatter and look evening wear would be the ideal solution.
I’ve always said mumsnet will have the answers so I’m hoping you style queens can help me and DD out! Many thanks.

My daughter sounds exactly the same as yours - in attitude and in shape! For a family occasion in the summer she wore a coral trouser suit - paper bag style trousers which I hated but she liked - with a white body suit from river island and white block sandals.

I can't find the links (probably last season so sold out now) but some of those ASOS ones look nice.

Bluewidow · 20/09/2018 20:11

Let her wear what she wants. She's old enlighten to decide what she wants and rock it.

As for the previous poster who said about banning 50s dresses from style suggestion for anyone over size 14. These styles of dresses are the most flattering - the pencil dresses.

MortyVicar · 20/09/2018 20:15

Would she consider something like these worn together (if trousers are allowed)?

Getting something off the peg tailored will help - I find it hard to get trousers that fit (big bum/hips, narrower waist). She might find some trousers too long.

No they’re not. On some people they look nice but as the default “oh you’re a size 14 why don’t you try them” it’s lazy and looks ridiculous. Especially on a shy teenager.

Wow! Feeling a little overwhelmed with all the fabulous advice. I’ve been googling outfits from all your suggestions and..... we have an order placed!!!! BlueJava you are a genius! She took one look at Joe Browns and said that’s my sort of shop!!!
The first two are on order but we both loved the last coat. I suspect It’s too much of a coat though, what do you guys think?

HouseofGoldandBones, where do you think your friends DD got it? It would be good to have a go to for events like this.

MortyVicar, they are both lovely, but she hates anything floaty.

We thought knee high boots with a bit of a heel to go with a jacket. Bad idea?

CreativeMumma · 20/09/2018 20:27

As someone who is a size 14 and has been bigger I wear 50's dresses!
I always get complemnts. The lady v Lyra dress is particularly flattering.

Also I thought op's post was for brainstorming ideas that could work and suggest things she and her dd may not have thought of. There is no need to be unkind.

nzeire · 20/09/2018 20:27

Some awesome suggestions!!!

MrsAird · 20/09/2018 20:34

knee high boots - depends on the trouser shape, what's the plan there?

I love the Joe Brown jackets she's picked out. I think you're right, the coat is maybe a bit too long (and hot for an indoor do?)

LemonysSnicket · 20/09/2018 20:35

A velvet blazer to add some glam?
It is her formal though, not yours, so chill

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 20/09/2018 20:41

what about a nice fitted blazer, either peplum or longline

We are going fitted trousers I think. I now feel I have a “look” we can work with! Thank you for all the suggestions. I love the vintage dress look (fancy a few of them for myself!) but dresses or anything with a flounce are a total no no.
There seem to be a few posters who think I’m imposing my ideas on her. I’m really not! All I want is an outfit both she and the school would be happy with. If that was a giraffe jumpsuit then I’d be buying one of those. Thank you for all the suggestions, I’ve loved them all!

I aive some Zara Men tuxedo jackets. They fit me well; I am a 16. They put them under 'Blazers'.

(In the post Christmas sale, all the fancy ones go down to £19.99 ...)

dress it up with nice heels and plenty of accessories. think brooches on lapels or a flashy choker or a thin blingy belt

Andthentherewere5 · 20/09/2018 20:57

NoTea, I love the purple top! So does DD, perfect for coverage, colour and glam.
