what do you think about silver or white nails?

I've been watching old films and notice that there was a trend in the 40's for silver or white nails. I fancy silver but don't want to look like a 90's "here comes the millenium" throwback. This is what I would look like, right?

Chrome/silver nails are very in at the moment !

MoltonSilver · 20/09/2018 19:02

Are these black and white movies?

Talisin · 20/09/2018 19:48

I’m wearing silver polish right now - OPI’s ‘Haven’t the Foggiest’. Looks great, has been commented on favourably. Barry M Liquid Chrome in ‘Rain on Me’ is another favourite.

I posted this query with a pic a while ago and was told beyond a doubt it was old fashioned and 1991 esque.

mildshock · 20/09/2018 20:03

I think it depends on skin tone.

I'm white, and a little tanned so white and silvers looks quite nice at the moment. When winter rolls around it washes me out.

White polish looks lovely on those with deeper skin tones.

Needahairbrush · 20/09/2018 20:08

I should have added I disagreed and still sore it though!!

Like silver but white reminds me of the days we used to paint our nails with tippex

dudsville · 21/09/2018 11:52

Molton, they are B&W films but you can still tell, also if you read the old books the finger nail colour is often commented upon.

I tried white and was duly reminded of tippex Goose! It's off.

Needahairbrush, and everyone, I guess I'll try it. I like the idea of chrome. I've bought a silver but a chrome finish would be cooler. I am wondering about the comment about skin tone though and am thinking it will look rubbish on my pale skin but it's an itch that I have to scratch.

I like a cream/nude toned white

cleopatracomingatya · 21/09/2018 15:41

i LOVE white nails, but only with a tan

applepineapple · 21/09/2018 15:48

OPI Funny Bunny is a sheer white and very flattering. You can apply more costs for better opacity Smile

I've had silver glitter and chrome as part of a bigger design with other colours as well. I think it looks really good. All silver then no.
I've had white as a base colour with something else on top which again is nice, especially with marble. Wouldn't have all plain white though

Girlwiththearabstrap · 21/09/2018 15:58

I like silver or white. Especially white with a tan.

As an aside if they are black and white films, it's unlikely to be white or silver polish and much more likely to be red or pink as they don't show up on black and white film.
The Addams family set was bright pink as it showed up as a nice grey!

EnidButton · 21/09/2018 16:22

Were they that colour so they showed up on film?

It reminds me very much of the early 2000's. The 90's are in but I can't imagine 2002 style ever coming back.

dudsville · 23/09/2018 20:14

Enid, interesting, I don't know if that's why they did it but you can tell. Finger nail polish colour is also something that Raymond Chandler often describes, he was very detailed!

OP posts:
MoltonSilver · 23/09/2018 22:17

That's what I was thinking too Enid. They used colours that would show up well in black and white. It would have made them fashionable despite not looking great in real life.

Girlwiththearabstrap · 24/09/2018 07:03

The main colour polish was red/pink in the 40s. This shows up as white in a B&W films.
