I know there are a lot of strong opinions about these things BUT I'm going to London for the weekend, will be wearing jeans and trainers for the whole time, and I don't want to take a jacket. For that time when it's too warm for coats but not quite warm enough to be in your shirt sleeves, is a big cardi or a cardi/coat hybrid not a good solution...? Or will I look irredeemably frumpy?

I always feel that they add additional bulk and feel like I look fat in them, but I've seen plenty of people who carry them off well. Maybe a finer knit one might work as an extra layer?

Butterfly1975 · 19/09/2018 16:43

I've never found a flattering one yet! Jigsaw recently had some lovely, fine knit ponchos which could be another option?

I have two and love them. Came on to day , yes definitely. I thought I looked good in them but am now wondering!

onlyconnect · 19/09/2018 16:56

Meant to say "came on to say"

Disabrie22 · 19/09/2018 17:00

Look at the blog Does My Bum Look 40? - she wears them and I love mine - get a well cut oatmeal or camel one

oohyoudevilyou · 19/09/2018 17:03

I have this one www.next.co.uk/g67132s3#503781 and I love it. I'm of a chunky build, so yes, I probably look big in it, but it's comfy, useful for cooler weather and quite reasonably priced. So there!

rightknockered · 19/09/2018 18:12

I think they look nice if what you're wearing under them is sleek, such as leggings(yes really) or short skirt with or without tights.

Welshcake77 · 19/09/2018 18:54

I agree with rightknockered sleek underneath and not too chunky on top and they look great!
I wear one often with skinny jeans, trainers and vest top or cami

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/09/2018 18:59

I think they can look great on other people, but when I've tried them on they add 20 years. I suspect it depends how shapely and stylish and well groomed you are overall (not so much stylish or well groomed in my case alas).

MindBodyChocolate · 19/09/2018 19:01

I like them!! And they’re really useful at this time of year. Agree though that to stop a too frumpy a look, keep it fitted underneath.

KitNCaboodle · 19/09/2018 19:01

Agree with sleek underneath. I wear mine with skinny jeans and strappy top. I love it

Notnewonhere · 19/09/2018 19:04

I'm pulling mine out for tomorrow

GraceMarks · 19/09/2018 19:22

Thanks all. I tried a few on just now, and I don't think I possess the prerequisite sleekness and style to make the look work. I looked rather lumpy and harried, and also my bum was magnified several times over. To plan B - just wear an extra layer underneath instead!

Would a trench coat work as an alternative (more stylish!) solution?

Botanicbaby · 19/09/2018 21:02

I don’t think they do you any favours if you’re short, dumpy, with large boobs and/or bum. Some can look nice though if they fit well and don’t look like frumpy cardigans.
