Fashion expressions that annoy you

Does anyone have any phrases that make them twitch?

Mine is people saying they were diagnosed or self-diagnosed as a season. You don't have an illness or a problem. Colours are analysed or you can be draped as a season.

I'll ready the biscuits

Something I keep seeing is "buttery" to describe anything leather.

Any time a leather jacket is on a blog/ magazine/ Instagram, it's "buttery soft". WHY?? Get some new adjectives! It's a bit of a weird image anyway, makes me think the jacket is a bit greasy or something.

NotANotMan · 05/10/2018 22:15

Buttery is the worst! Makes me think the handbag is slimy.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/10/2018 22:49

It's very specific to May books magazines and content, but 'painterly florals'. Every year, someone wangs on about painterly florals and I hate it each time.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/10/2018 22:50

Ooh, and ACCENTUATE.
People are always accentuating stuff with makeup.
No one else accentuates things outside of beauty.

Ohdobakeoffdear · 05/10/2018 22:53

Jean. What the fuck is jean??!!!

Trouser, tight and lip (the same kind of annoyance but not as infuriating as jean).

championquartz · 05/10/2018 23:01

Buttery!! Jeebus that gets on my goat.
Totally agree with NotANotMan wtf does that mean. It appears to be the default descriptive term for a decent leather anything. Jeez. Stop. There’s plenty of words.

Soft supple moudable smooth easy flexible fine yielding velvety, even high quality would do for starters.

Stop with the buttery.

SplatPancake · 06/10/2018 02:39

Off topic, but @MickHucknallsPinkPancakes — ❤️ Your name 😂. A phrase that still reduces me and DH to rivulets of honking laughter...

Also “swipe up” - I know it’s an Instagram thing, but I associate it with fashion bloggers and I hate everything it embodies

mostimproved · 06/10/2018 03:35

The phrase "off duty" which seems to just mean "casual" e.g "nail this season's off duty look" is just an article about jeans and leather jackets - what are we meant to be wearing when "on duty"?!

Noloudnoises · 06/10/2018 03:49

'Husheetas'

I'm really embarrassed for people extolling the virtues Hush's clothes on mumsnet.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 06/10/2018 06:43

Yes, apart from anything else, Husheeta sounds like an incontinence pad.

MrsMaisel · 06/10/2018 07:26

'Diffusion line'.

Read, cheaper than the main line, for those who can't afford it - but nowhere near as nice...

PootrolliumJelly · 06/10/2018 08:10

'Pre-loved'

Agree with this.

I buy a lot of my stuff on Ebay and laugh when I see "pre-loved" particularly when the tags are still on. Couldn't have been "loved" that much then Grin. Why not just say second-hand (like we used to in the olden days)?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/10/2018 08:47

"A nod to"
"Buy into"

Both phrases used by the bloke on QVC (high fashion I know) when something has a random zip or stripe that's meant to be popular.

"So cosy" usually a huge padded coat or jumper that will make me look like I'm wearing DH coat , but I'll look cosy

Any words that come out of Dennis Basso's face . Angry

Alienspaceship · 06/10/2018 08:56

‘A knit’ Angry

dudsville · 06/10/2018 09:00

Ooh. I don't normally post in the "I hate" threads but I do really hate the infantalisation of clothing items, why when talking about a strappy top or strappy heels
Or "lippy" do we have to go all cutesy? That sort of thing.

onlyconnect · 06/10/2018 09:11

Price point. It could be used to actually mean something but is usually used instead of just " price". Yuk!

MonolithiK · 06/10/2018 09:27

‘Combo’
‘Accessorise’
‘Edgy’
‘Own it’

Bloobs · 06/10/2018 13:57

Yes buttery! Buttery-soft fecking leather! Not only is it the only word ever used to describe soft leather, it's also apparently the only type of leather at all. Just stop it!

It's the fashion-journalist equivalent of "The write stuff" invariably used about anything to do with writers, pens or stationery. Angry

Also hate "teamed" and "the edit" / "curated". In other words, most of our collection is shite so we asked someone to pick out the nice stuff.

nothingwittyhere · 06/10/2018 14:06

Product.

thethoughtfox · 06/10/2018 14:09

fash pack

MikeUniformMike · 06/10/2018 15:07

I don't like rocking, rocks either. Or rocking up in...

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 06/10/2018 16:21

@SplatPancake i shamelessly stole it from TV Go Home which was, if I recall written by Charlie Brooker as a kind of spoof Radio Times.

I used to howl at the weekly situations they'd make up for Mick to press his testicles on different clear surfaces. Grin

SplatPancake · 06/10/2018 16:38

I remember it only too well Mick! God it was funny!

PavlovaFaith · 06/10/2018 16:54

Just for the record, 1980s clothing is vintage... vintage is up to 20 years before present day "widely speaking".

Wellhellothere101 · 06/10/2018 17:09

This thread is setting my teeth on edge with cringeyness!
I HATE when fashionistas describe a ‘simple white tee’ Aaaargh!
It’s a fucking T-SHIRT NOT A TEE!!! Angry
